Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, Vol. 1 The Bible is in no sense a text-book of natural science, and its Divine Author seems to have never intimated that such teaching is a leading or prominent aim in the bestowment of this invaluable gift. But it is evident, in the nature of things, that when it does teach science, it teaches it with absolute truthfulness, Long ago, in allusion to animated nature, it said, The blood is the life thereof - a truth slowly received by modern physiology, and recognised only within the memory of some present. And early in the centuries it set forth, in its army regulations, the disinfecting properties and' powers of dry earth, and had its directions been rigidly followed, in our late civil war thousands of lives would have been saved, and men who are mere wrecks would have remained strong and manly. Allow me a quotation And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee. Nor is it silent on surgery, and we learn, from its description, that the first surgical operation, known to earth, was performed while the subject of it was under anaesthetic influence. And we are told, by the same high authority, that, Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, and, that All these things happened unto them for ensamples, and they are written for our admonition, and yet how slow have we been to learn, or to receive, the admonition that surgical operations should be painless, and that, when painful, they are not performed in accordance with true science. That surgical operations should be unattended with pain is all the more reasonable, when we recognize, as I think we must, that anaesthesia is, in its essential nature, a physiological, and not of necessity a pathological condition. True, many, and perhaps most patients, when anaesthetised, are in pathological states, but this may be their misfortune, and the fault of undeveloped surgical science, and in no sense a necessity of anaesthesia. Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, 1885, Vol. 5 While so many in the profession are deploring the decline of true prosthesis at the present time, very few. It would seem, truly understand the causes which led to it, or the means by which it mav again be restored to its former position in the estimation of the more intelligent men in the profession. And yet these causes are easily found. They exist in every dental workshop where vulcan ite and section teeth constitute any considerable portion of the business. And it was the invention and introduction of the latter which marks the decline of true dental prosthesis. With the invention of section teeth, the necessity for taste, skill and judgment on the part of the dentist, no longer existed. Or if it did, it could not longer be exercised. Why study expression, and nature's methods, when by no possibility, could those methods be followed? Whoever has observed the endless modifications which exist in the arrangement of the natural teeth, also the wonderful vari ety of expression, resulting from these modifications, has not failed to perceive that, to reproduce in artificial teeth, every shade and variety, which we behold in nature, must, of necessity, require long and careful study of the methods of arrangement. Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, 1882, Vol. 2 Thirty years ago, metal plates were used exclusively, and today they are the only suitable material, in all respects, for artificial dentures. Thirty years ago, gum sections were carved for each case, and mounted on gold plates, and were used very extensively throughout the Eastern States. But today the moulded sections have taken their place, and the result is a stereotyped, stiff and unnatural looking system of artificial teeth. Thirty years ago, Dr. John Allen brought to the notice of the profession his Continuous Gum Work, and it remains to-day unchallenged as the only perfect method of constructing artificial dentures, and I must confess I see little room for improvement. Thirty years ago, it required at least a fair degree of mechan ical skill to make and insert a set of artificial teeth. Today the merest tyro can buy a set of gum sections, a piece of rubber, take an impression, and make a so-called set of teeth. But it is sickening to witness the result, as one moves along the street enters the public assembly, or the social circle. Artificial teeth written everywhere. This is the Present. What is to be the Future? It is to be just what an enlight ened, progressive profession shall choose to make it. Excerpt from The Ohio Journal of Dental Science, 1887, Vol. 7 The measure referred to seems a little complex, but is very simple when understood. The educational interests of the col lege were put under the care and control of this, known as the ohio dental college association, and each member had one vote. These individual votes were not cast as the votes of stock holders; for the man with but one share, or no share at all, if only a member, had the same power as the one owning a dozen shares. The charter provided that in the simple control of the property, as such, only stockholders had a right to vote, and thev were entitled to a vote for each share of stock: But, to become a member of the College Association, a man had to be elected to membership by a majority vote of the mem bers acting, the incorporators' being the original members. Then it'was provided that an alumnus, by paying annually the interest on a share of stock was eligible to membership, and if so elected he had an equal vote as to the control of the educational matters of the college. Thus it was made easy to prevent the perversion of the institution by designing men buying up the stock, for such speculators would not be elected to membership in the associa tion, and consequently have no voice in selecting a faculty, or in prescribing a curriculum of study. The stockholders had power over the property, to buy, sell, build, etc. While as stockholders simply they had no other power. If elected to membership in the association, as they were eligible, they had power over the educational interests, having each a single vote, regardless of the stock they owned.
