King Oedipus/Oedipus at Colonus/Antigone Three towering works of Greek tragedy depicting the inexorable downfall of a doomed royal dynasty The legends surrounding the house of Thebes inspired Sophocles to create this powerful trilogy about humanity's struggle against fate. King Oedipus is the devastating portrayal of a ruler who brings pestilence to Thebes for crimes he does not realize he has committed and then inflicts a brutal punishment upon himself. Oedipus at Colonus provides a fitting conclusion to the life of the aged and blinded king, while Antigone depicts the fall of the next generation, through the conflict between a young woman ruled by her conscience and a king too confident of his own authority. Translated with an Introduction by E. F. WATLING

Oedipus was the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta. Before he was born, his parents consulted the Oracle at Delphi. The Oracle prophesied that Oedipus would murder his father and marry his mother. In an attempt to prevent this prophecy's fulfillment, Laius ordered Oedipus's feet to be bound together, and pierced with a stake. Afterwards, the baby was given to a herdsman who was told to kill him. Unable to go though with his orders, he instead gave the child to a second herdsman who took the infant, Oedipus, to the king of Corinth, Polybus. Polybus adopted Oedipus as his son. Oedipus was raised as the crown prince of Corinth. Many years later Oedipus was told that Polybus was not his real father. Seeking the truth, he sought counsel from an Oracle and thus started the greatest tragedy ever written.

Oedipus Rex is the greatest of the Greek tragedies, a profound meditation on the human condition. The story of the mythological king, who is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother, has resonated in world culture for almost 2,500 years. But Sophocles’ drama as originally performed was much more than a great story—it was a superb poetic script and exciting theatrical experience. The actors spoke in pulsing rhythms with hypnotic forward momentum, making it hard for audiences to look away. Interspersed among the verbal rants and duels were energetic songs performed by the chorus. David Mulroy’s brilliant verse translation of Oedipus Rex recaptures the aesthetic power of Sophocles’ masterpiece while also achieving a highly accurate translation in clear, contemporary English. Speeches are rendered with the same kind of regular iambic rhythm that gave the Sophoclean originals their drive. The choral parts are translated as fluid rhymed songs. Mulroy also supplies an introduction, notes, and appendixes to provide helpful context for general readers and students.

Oedipus the King is Sophocles' legendary rendition of the myth of the great king Oedipus, perhaps the best known of all of the Greek Tragedies. When an oracle foretells that the young prince Oedipus will grow up to murder his father he is cast out of the kingdom by the king who hopes by doing so that he will avoid his fate. Oedipus grows up and many years later, not knowing his own identity, or the identity of his father, meets him at a crossroad where they argue and the king is killed. The rest of the tale pivots around the unraveling of this tangled family history and the appalling discovery of, not only patricide, but Oedipus' subsequent incest in unwittingly marrying his own mother.

Comprised of three plays in the Theban saga - Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone - this collection tells of the tragic exploits of Oedipus the king of Thebes, and his daughter Antigone. In Oedipus the King (also known by its Latin title Oedipus Rex) the young Oedipus hears a prophecy from the Oracle at Delphi that he will "Mate with [his] own mother, and shed/With [his] own hands the blood of [his] own sire". Terrified of the prediction, he flees whom he thinks to be his biological parents, only to unwittingly encounter - and kill - his biological father, King Laius, setting in motion the events that will see the Delphic prophecy fulfilled. In Oedipus at Colonus we witness Oedipus as an old man, ostracised and distrusted by society at large for his earlier misdeeds. Blind, he Oedipus is led by his daughter/sister Antigone to meet with King Theseus, with whom he wishes to speak prior to dying. The play culminates in Oedipus' death, and eventual judgment by the Gods themselves for his terrible sins of patricide and incest. Antigone sees Oedipus daughter navigate the drama of a Civil War in Thebes, engaging and vying with the present king Creon. Portrayed as a heroine with much faith for her family, Antigone's steels her resolve in a time of upheaval and tragic conflict ensuing between the aristocracy of Thebes. This superb edition of Sophocles' classic Oedipus Trilogy brings out the original spirit and intensity of all three plays, encapsulated by the translation of F. Storr.
