Excerpt from Oceana County Pioneers and Businessmen of to-Day: History, Biography, Statistics and Humorous Incidents It is perhaps the adaptability of soil and climate for fruit raising that has given this section its greatest reputation. The Michigan Fruit Belt is a strip of territory with a shadowy interior bounda ry, in which peaches are grown with a smaller per centage of failures than elsewhere in the State - (michigan and its Resources.) This strip extends along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan from Ben zie county on the north to Berrien county on the south, and being from ten to twenty miles in width. By an examination of the map of Michigan it Will be seen that Oceana lies about midway between the northern and southern extremes of this belt, and it has the greatest projection into Lake Michigan of any portion of the State. County-by-county, it lists the names, addresses, websites, e-mail addresses, and hours of business of libraries, archives, genealogical and historical societies, courthouses, and other record repositories; describes their manuscripts and record collections; highlights their special holdings; and provides details regarding queries, searches, and restrictions on the use of their records.

These Men Have Seen Hard Service recounts the fascinating history of one outstanding Michigan regiment during the Civil War. A compelling political, social, ethnic, and military drama, this book examines the lives of the 1300 men of the First Michigan Sharpshooters for the first time, beginning with the regiment's inception and extending through post-war activities until the death of the last rifleman in 1946. Beyond presenting numerous anecdotes about the men and officers and their contributions during the war, Raymond Herek provides insight into the medical community of the time, the draft, other commands in the same division, the politics endemic in raising a regiment, and Michigan's Native American contingent. The extensive appendices will be of particular use to genealogists, Civil War enthusiasts, and historians, because they list the men in the regiment, and also battle and camp casualties.

From Aabec in Antrim County to Zutphen in Ottawa County, from Hell to Hooker, Michigan Place Names is a compendium of information on the origins of the state's geographical names. With alphabetically arranged thumb-nail sketches, Walter Romig introduces readers to a host of colorful personalities and episodes which have achieved notoriety, though sometimes shortlived, by devising or lending their names to the state's settlements. Romig spent more than ten years researching and documenting the entries to which he added an extensive bibliography of sources and an index of the personal names used in the text. For the curious, the librarian, the genealogist, or the historian, his book is an indispensable resource. Michigan Place Names is another "Michigan classic" reissued as a Great Lakes Book.
