Excerpt from Observation of Symptoms The study of symptoms is the study of the patient. Every phenomenon, no matter how slight, may be an expression of the condition of the patient. The nurse should be familiar with all the manifestations of abnormal function in order that she may report the condition of the patient and may note anything unusual; but the combina tion of symptoms and their interpretation, which constitutes diagnosis, does not come within her province. First of all, it is necessary to have a thorough under standing of the human organism in health to know the normal standard of healthy function. Then by close observation it may be known in what respect the patient differs from this normal standard of health. This book endeavors to give the nurse a list of the symptoms which may be recognized by general observation during her care of the patient. Intelligent observation means the use of sight, hearing, touch, and even smell, and their degree of acuteness measures the ability of the observer.
