By: E.H. Marshall, Orig Pub. 1941, Reprinted 2019, 270 pages, soft cover, ISBN #0-89308-934-6. Obion County was created in 1823 from ceded Indian lands in the northwestern corner of the state. This land was first settled in 1819 when the western portion of the state was being opened for settlement. This book is not too different from other county history books of this era. With such topics as trade and transportation, labor, farming, politics, and race relations - all important in the development of the county - are discussed. This type of county history book can help one develop ideas or paths to those missing ancestors by showing the customs and traditions of the local residents.

A history of the early churches in Obion county, Tennessee, formed during the nineteenth century. Initially Calvinist in nature, some denominations adopted the Arminian belief in freewill. "It was under these circumstances and during this turbulent period of reexamination of Calvinist doctrine that the early churches of Obion County and West Tennessee were being established." By: W.P.A., Orig. Pub. 1941, reprinted 2019, 152 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #0-89308-972-9. Obion County was created in 1823 from the Western District. It sits in the north-western corner of the state boarding the Kentucky and Missouri. The court was held 4 times a year and heard such cases of assault, batteries, trespass, all breaches of the peace. They held authority of administration in intestate estates and orphans, granted license to build water grist mills, to taverns and ordinaries, and to build and maintain public ferries. The court also appointed Constables and Overseers of Roads, and named the men who lived within the bounds to keep them in repair, as well as recommending three persons to the Governor, of whom one was made Sheriff, as well as imposing taxes for roads, courthouses and goals, appointed all county officers, civil and military, all lists of Jurors and probates of Wills. These records are extremely valuable for the researcher, especially if an ancestor died intestate (without a will), and in some instances a person may be listed in these court records and nowhere else in the county records.
