Musculoskeletal health refers to a condition of being healthy without any musculoskeletal conditions. These conditions can include numerous diseases, such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Musculoskeletal health is considered good when the bones, muscles and joints work well together without any pain. People who have good musculoskeletal health are able to perform their desired activities easily and without pain. The consumption of a varied and balanced diet rich in nutrients is helpful in maintaining musculoskeletal health. In the absence of important nutrients the chance of developing bone, joint or muscle disease increases, which can result in symptoms like restricted movement, joint deformity, swelling, pain and stiffness. Nutrition can modulate the immune system, help in suppressing inflammation and pain, and provide specialized nutrients required for maintenance, growth and repair. This book traces the progress of research on musculoskeletal health. It aims to shed light on the role of nutrition for improving musculoskeletal health. Researchers and students engaged in this area of study will be assisted by this book.

The maintenance of optimal musculoskeletal health is increasingly recognized as a key element for promoting overall health and fostering independent living in advanced age. Growing evidence indicates that nutrition, together with an active lifestyle, plays a central role in supporting musculoskeletal health both aging and in the setting of specific disease conditions. This Special Issue of Nutrients, entitled “Nutrition for Musculoskeletal Health”, includes original research and review contributions highlighting the relevance of nutrition to musculoskeletal health during aging and in the context of specific diseases. The overarching theme of the Special Issue is addressed through a multidisciplinary set of articles embracing clinical, basic science, and translational studies.

Nutrition has long been the missing ingredient in the treatment of the various musculoskeletal conditions seen daily by the health professionals. The often-stated reason for giving nutrition short shrift is the lack of evidence. Responding to this need, Scientific Evidence for Musculoskeletal, Bariatric, and Sports Nutrition provides clinicians wit

Recent research indicates that gender differences in anatomy and physiology, endocrinology, hand eye co-ordination and motor development have an effect on the kinds of injuries incurred as a result of sporting activities. Since men and women have different responses to exercise; strength and conditioning programs should be modified for these differences. Musculoskeletal Health in Women was born out of a need to provide fitness advice tailored to women. For example, research has focused on correcting neuromuscular imbalances in women to prevent injuries. Increased abduction moment at the knee and balance problems have been found to be predictors of ACL injury. Muscle strengthening with special emphasis on the terminal knee extensors and hip abductors can improve these neuromuscular imbalances. Additionally, taping and bracing at the ankle may be helpful, particularly in women prone to certain injuries. Any discussion of women’s sports injuries is only complete if it includes the Female Athlete Triad: energy availability (which is affected by eating disorders), osteoporosis, and menstrual function. Musculoskeletal Health in Women provides a fully-illustrated and comprehensive overview of all of these aspects and its multidisciplinary approach ensures that expertise is provided from disciplines such as psychiatry, physiatry, endocrinology, nutrition, rheumatology, orthopedics, physical therapy and radiology. These authors have worked with women athletes of all ilks and are well equipped to address a full spectrum of issues related to the musculoskeletal health of women. Musculoskeletal Health in Women will be of primary interest to women athletes and women embarking on a fitness regimen. Health professionals working in this area would also invariably benefit from the advice and guidance provided within these pages.

This book comprehensively covers the topics and discussions covered at the 10th International Symposium on Nutritional Aspects of Osteoporosis. It is the only international meeting that exclusively covers the role of nutrition on musculoskeletal health and function. Current thinking on the role of nutrition on bone and muscle development and health, and as a means of preventing osteoporosis, falls and fractures is covered. The latest evidence on the potential roles that protein, potassium, B vitamins, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and flavonoids in the context of bone and muscle health are also discussed. Nutritional Influences on Bone Health reviews the role of nutrition in bone health and its potential role in preventing osteoporosis and sarcopenia in ageing populations, providing a valuable and practically applicable resource for practising and trainee health and medical professionals.

As computer and space technologies have been developed, geoscience information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies, which deal with the geospatial information, have been rapidly maturing. Moreover, over the last few decades, machine learning techniques including artificial neural network (ANN), deep learning, decision tree, and support vector machine (SVM) have been successfully applied to geospatial science and engineering research fields. The machine learning techniques have been widely applied to GIS and RS research fields and have recently produced valuable results in the areas of geoscience, environment, natural hazards, and natural resources. This book is a collection representing novel contributions detailing machine learning techniques as applied to geoscience information systems and remote sensing.
