There is a documented need for caring education regarding patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for nursing students and nursing staff. The autism spectrum population is increasing, one in 59 children in the United States as reported by the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network (as cited in Baio et al., 2018). Nurses are expected to provide appropriate care, showing respect and understanding at all times to both the client and family. Through lack of knowledge and misunderstanding the ASD population has not been given this care. Based on Watson’s Theory of Caring, an educational ASD caring program was created for a summer session Family Nurse Practitioner assessment class. This educational program provided basic knowledge of ASD and appropriate communication skills for caregivers, guided by caring science concepts. Using the Caring Factor Survey-Care Provider Version, Short Version (CFS-CPV) by Nelson, Thiel, Hozak, and Thomas (2016), and the Autism Knowledge Survey-Revised (AKS-R) by Swiezy, Stuart, and Ashby (2005), student perceived ability to care and student knowledge of ASD were measured. There was a 4.8% and 16% improvement, respectively, from pre- to posttest, but the results are inconclusive due to the small response rate. Nursing curriculums and continuing education offerings should include knowledge related to working with special populations, such as those with communication disorders. Nursing practice guided by caring science principles help nurses to build authentic relationships with patients and families resulting in better health outcomes.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevalence rates are increasing within the pediatric population. Often, these children present to emergency departments (EDs) for care that could typically be managed in a primary care setting. Furthermore, pediatric patients with ASD utilize EDs at a rate higher than children without (Baio et al., 2018). Parents, patients, and providers within the pediatric ED setting report a lack of understanding and tools needed to provide quality and meaningful care to this population. The utilization of nurse practitioners in the ED setting is increasing due to affordability and quality of care delivery. The intersection of these two variables presents an important opportunity for the nurse practitioner to serve as a care provider and advocate for children with ASD within the ED setting. It also allows the nurse practitioner working within the ED setting to act as an educator and resource for other providers working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. These roles would aid in improving quality of care and health equity to children with ASD

In the United States, one out of every 68 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Although the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder can be detected by 24 months of age, the average age of diagnosis is 4 to 5 years. A lack of a diagnostic laboratory test for autism spectrum disorder and inadequate provider training accounts for the difficulty in establishing a diagnosis for the disorder. While there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, early identification, diagnosis, and evidence-based interventions can improve a child's development and enhance their quality of life. The goal of this project was to improve the screening for autism spectrum disorder by nurse practitioners in a community health clinic. The project was enacted using the Iowa Model Quality Improvement Framework and concepts and theories adapted from Betty Neuman's system Model. It examined the routine screening practices and use of validated tools for autism spectrum disorder by nurse practitioners in a community health clinic. The project identified culture and language as the biggest barriers to screening for autism spectrum disorder among Somali patients. It developed a video screening resource guide that nurse practitioners can use to screen for autism spectrum disorder during 18 and 24 months well child visits. The resource guide was instrumental in increasing knowledge, transforming nursing practice, and improving the outcomes of Somali children with autism spectrum disorder.

Background: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neuro-developmental disorders that are characterized by impaired social interaction, communication, and restricted or repetitive behavior. Children with an ASD also display significant sensory experiences due to sensory disintegration. This integrative review of literature examines the sensory experiences of children with an ASD and determines nursing interventions that will enable them to better cope within the hospital setting. Method: an extensive search of databases and current literature on sensory experiences of children with an ASD and interventions that facilitate coping. Results: Children with an ASD experience a wide range of sensitivity and defensiveness toward stimuli that differs on an individual basis. There is no current research that reflects nursing interventions for children with an ASD, therefore interventions from other heath care occupations were examined and applied to nursing. Conclusion: Further research is needed to better understand sensory defensiveness and research is needed in the area of nursing interventions to enable the best nursing care of children with an ASD.

With a rapidly increasing rate of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses in the past several years, the need for providers trained specifically in providing routine care to patients with ASD and other behavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders has grown considerably. However, training healthcare professionals in other specialties as well to care for these patients in a variety of settings becomes paramount. Emergency departments (ED) have started to see a rise in ASD patients needing care, though research shows that most medical and nursing schools in the U.S. do not provide the curriculum and training to meet the needs of this population. The current study aimed to examine emergency department nurses' prior knowledge and experience in taking care of ASD patients and if implementing an educational intervention might increase both competence and confidence in providing future care to these patients in the ED. After presenting an educational intervention discussing ASD and current recommendations for care in the emergency setting, results showed that the nurse participants had increased levels of competence and confidence in their knowledge of the disorder and how to approach the unique challenges that may present during care of the autistic patient.
