Within the context of a double-folding optical potential approximation to the exact nucleus-nucleus multiple-scattering series, eikonal scattering theory is used to generate tables of nucleon and deuteron total and absorption cross sections at kinetic energies between 25 MeV/nucleon and 22.5 GeV/nucleon for use in cosmic-ray transport and shielding studies. Comparisons of predictions for nucleon-nucleus and deuteron-nucleus absorption and total cross sections with experimental data are also made. Townsend, L. W. and Wilson, J. W. and Bidasaria, H. B. A simple but comprehensive theory of nuclear reactions is presented. Extensive tables of nucleon, deuteron, and heavy-ion absorption cross sections over a broad range of energies are generated for use in cosmic ray shielding studies. Numerous comparisons of the calculated values with available experimental data show agreement to within 3 percent for energies above 80 MeV/nucleon and within approximately 10 percent for energies as low as 30 MeV/nucleon. These tables represent the culmination of the development of the absorption cross section formalism and supersede the preliminary absorption cross sections published previously in NASA TN D-8107, NASA TP-2138, and NASA TM-84636.

Total cross sections have been measured for protons, deuterons, alphas, and $sup 12$C on hydrogen, deuterium, helium, and carbon targets at 1.55 and 2.89 GeV/c/nucleon using the ''good geometry'' transmission method. In addition, the inelastic cross sections and elastic slope parameters were measured for reactions initiated by deuterons, alphas, and $sup 12$C. The factorization relation sigma/ sub T/(AA) = sigma/sub T/(AB)$sup 2$/sigma/sub T/(BB) is violated for some of these reactions. The results generally agree with Glauber theory predictions except in their detailed energy behavior. It is found that sigma/sub T/ approximately equal to 144 (A/sub T//sup $sup 1$/$sub 3$/ + A/sub P//sup $sup 1$/ $sub 3$/ - 1.48)$sup 2$ and sigma/sub IN/ approximately equal to 78 (A/sub T//sup $sup 1$/$sub 3$/ + A/sub P//sup $sup 1$/$sub 3$/ - 1.25)$sup 2$, where A/sub T/(A/ sub P/) is the atomic mass number of the target (projectile) and the cross sections are given in mb. (auth).
