This is a study to identify predicted effects of the carbon nucleus environment on neutrino - nucleus interactions with low momentum transfer. A large sample of neutrino interaction data collected by the MINERvA experiment is analyzed to show the distribution of charged hadron energy in a region with low momentum transfer. These distributions reveal a major discrepancy between the data and a popular interaction model with only the simplest Fermi gas nuclear effects. Detailed analysis of systematic uncertainties due to energy scale and resolution can account for only a little of the discrepancy. Two additional nuclear model effects, a suppression/screening effect (RPA), and the addition of a meson exchange current process (MEC), are shown to improve the description of the data.

Two different nuclear-medium effects are isolated using a low three-momentum transfer subsample of neutrino-carbon scattering data from the MINERvA neutrino experiment. The observed hadronic energy in charged-current [nu][mu] interactions is combined with muon kinematics to permit separation of the quasielastic and [Delta](1232) resonance processes. First, we observe a small cross section at very low energy transfer that matches the expected screening effect of long-range nucleon correlations. Second, additions to the event rate in the kinematic region between the quasielastic and [Delta] resonance processes are needed to describe the data. The data in this kinematic region also have an enhanced population of multiproton final states. Contributions predicted for scattering from a nucleon pair have both properties; the model tested in this analysis is a significant improvement but does not fully describe the data. We present the results as a double-differential cross section to enable further investigation of nuclear models. Improved description of the effects of the nuclear environment are required by current and future neutrino oscillation experiments.

The study of neutrinos and their interaction with matter has made many important contributions to our present knowledge of physics. This advanced text introduces neutrino physics and presents a theoretical framework for describing relativistic particles. It gives a pedagogical description of the neutrino, its properties, the standard model of electroweak interactions, and neutrino scattering from leptons and nucleons. Focusing on the role of nuclear effects, the discussion extends to various processes of quasielastic, inelastic, and deep inelastic scattering from nucleons and nuclei. Neutrino sources, detection and oscillation, along with the role of neutrinos in astrophysics and motivation for the need of physics beyond the standard model are discussed in detail. This topical book will stimulate new ideas and avenues for research, and will form a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers working in the field of neutrino physics.

"MINERvA is a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment that investigates the effects of the nuclear medium on neutrino interactions on different targets in the energy range of the few-GeV. One of the motivations of those measurements is to provide a solid understanding of cross-sections in that energy regime that can be useful for the physics program of the current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. Because of the different interaction types in the few-GeV regime, MINERvA specializes in studying interactions with several final state production channels. Previous measurements of single-[pi]0 production on hydrocarbon using a neutrino beam with a mean energy of 3 GeV have shown remarkable discrepancies between the predicted and the observed cross-sections in the low-Q2 regime. Such results were consistent with similar measurements from the MiniBooNE and MINOS experiments, both made of carbon-based detectors. This thesis will describe the results of the novel analysis of neutrino-induced single-[pi]0 production on lead and iron using a neutrino beam with a mean energy of 6 GeV. This thesis work aims to investigate similar suppression effects at low momentum transfer and offer a glance at those effects in a heavy nuclei medium"--Page xvi.

This volume contains the proceedings of an International Conference on "Spin and Isospin in Nuclear Interactions", which was held in Telluride, Colorado USA, 11-15 March 1991. This was the fifth in a series of conferences held in Telluride every three years since 1979. In attendance at the conference were just under 100 participants, representing a total of 43 institutes from 12 different countries. In keeping with previous Telluride conferences, the role of spin and isospin degrees of freedom in both nuclear structure and nuclear interactions remained an important theme. Topics covered included new results on the spin- and isospin-dependent terms in the free and effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, Gamow-Teller excitations, charge and spin exchange with hadronic probes, and spin measurements with leptonic probes. Recent progress in the development of polarized sources, polarized targets, and po larimetry was also discussed, as were applications to neutrino physics and astrophysics. Whereas earlier Telluride conferences had dealt primarily with nucleon-nucleus inter actions, this meeting included extensive discussions on the role of spin and flavor in particle interactions, and on ways of "bridging the gap" between concepts usually as sociated with particle physics and the domain of more conventional nuclear physics. The conference consisted of morning and evening scientific sessions, leaving the afternoons free for informal discussions, recreation, and enjoyment of the scenic beauty of the Telluride area. In addition to the invited talks, time was allotted for contributed talks on new results.

Market: Researchers and graduate students in high energy physics, physics historians. This book contains 13 papers that reflect the development of neutrino interactions with the electrons and protons in a fixed-target experiment that, beginning in 1980, grew out of the formal collaboration in high energy physics between Japanese and American institutions. These experiments were crucial to the merger of quantum electrodynamics and quantum weak dynamics, the foundation of electroweak theory today.

"Precise knowledge of neutrino interaction cross sections is required for current and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Precision neutrino oscillation measurements require inference of the neutrino energy and flavor from the visible particles in the neutrino interaction in the detector. This inference is different for the true neutrino flavors measured, electron and muon neutrinos, and can be studied by observation of neutrino interactions in an experiment's near detector. However, anti-electron neutrinos make up only a few percent of an anti-muon neutrino beam and pose a challenge in making cross section measurements and predictions. The reported measurements were made using data from MINERvA, a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment, with an anti-neutrino beam configuration of mean energy ~ 6 GeV. This thesis provides two double-differential cross sections of anti-electron neutrino inclusive charged-current reactions using the kinematics of visible energy, three-momentum transfer, and transverse momentum. The analysis is carried out at low three-momentum transfer, making it sensitive to regions with multi-nucleon effects"--Page v.

NuInt07, the fifth in a series of international workshops, was held at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. It was the successful continuation of a series of workshops focused solely on the understanding and measurement of low energy neutrino-nucleus interactions. Neutrino cross sections in the few-GeV energy range are an important ingredient for neutrino oscillation experiments as well as being interesting in their own right. Such measurements and their accompanying theoretical calculations had not been updated for decades. The goal of this workshop series has been to remedy this situation by providing an environment where both experimentalists and theorists in nuclear and high energy physics can come together to review and discuss recent progress in neutrino-nucleus measurements and calculations.
