Excerpt from E. M. Buechly's Novelties and Specialties in Small Fruits, Fruit Trees and Plants, 1896 Kansas. A very promising early variety of recent introduction. Has done well for the writer the two seasons on trial here. Price 50 cts. Per 10 by mail, or per 100 by ex press. Older. A new sort originating in the west, where it is said to be quite hardy and productive, and a great drouth resister growth of canes appears very hardy here; flavor very good not as firm as Gregg, but more juicy and palatable. Price 30 cts. Per 10, per 100, or $8 per by ex press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Wholesale Catalogue of Money-Producing Novelties and Specialties: Fall of 1895 and Spring of 1896 N troduced Spring of 1895. N ow offered to the trade for the first time Many of the leading growers ordered stock plants the past Spring at $1. 50 each, because it IS beyond question the randest and most beautiful Can na ever grown. Its market value will be always high. Twice color plated, its introduction has been national. It is known everywhere and cannot fail to be a ready seller. It rarely grows more than three feet in height and commences to bloom when but six to eight inches from the ground. The individual flowers are large, more than four inches in diameter, heavy in texture and are of the most refined refiexed form so much sought after, and which is found in no other Canna; they cluster around the stem in an even manner, giving the truss the grace and finish of a Hyacinth spike. The immense trusses of bloom are borne aloft in a firm, yet most graceful manner. The size of the truss is enormous - usually a foot in height and seven to eight inches in diameter. It blooms continuously throughout the growing season, both indoors and in open ground. Two or more side spikes are generally provided, which replace in succession the main truss as soon as its bloom has faded. How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

A brilliant work from the most influential philosopher since Sartre. In this indispensable work, a brilliant thinker suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul.

'A dense, challenging and important book.' Philip French Observer 'At the very least, this blockbuster is probably the best single volume history of Hollywood we're likely to get for a very long time.' Paul Kerr City Limits 'Persuasively argued, the book is also packed with facts, figures and photographs.' Nigel Andrews Financial Times Acclaimed for their breakthrough approach, Bordwell, Staiger and Thompson analyze the basic conditions of American film-making as a historical institution and consider to what extent Hollywood film production constitutes a systematic enterprise, in both its style and its business operations. Despite differences of director, genre or studio, most Hollywood films operate within a set of shared assumptions about how a film should look and sound. Such assumptions are neither natural nor inevitable; but because classical-style films have been the type most widely seen, they have come to be accepted as the 'norm' of film-making and viewing. The authors show how these classical conventions were formulated and standardized, and how they responded to the arrival of sound, colour, widescreen ratios and stereophonic sound. They argue that each new technological development has served a function within an existing narrational system. The authors also examine how the Hollywood cinema standardized the film-making process itself. They describe how, over the course of its history, Hollywood developed distinct modes of production in a constant search for maximum efficiency, predictability and novelty. Set apart by its combination of theoretical analysis and empirical evidence, this book is the standard work on the classical Hollywood cinema style of film-making from the silent era to the 1960s. Now available in paperback, it is a 'must' for film students, lecturers and all those seriously interested in the development of the film industry.
