Excerpt from Notes on the Parables, of the New Testament: Scripturally Illustrated and Argumentatively Defended The third edition was published in 1822, in the State of Maine, far distant from the author's residence, which allowed him no opportunity to revise or correct the work, both which he would have been glad to do at that time. During-the time, in which the present edition has been in press, the feeble state of the au thor's health has rendered it impossible for him to make all the corrections which better health and more leisure would have enabled him to do. To conclude: the reader may be assured that the sentiments maintained in the following sheets, are ac cording to the honest convictions entertained by the author, truths fully and clearly supported by divine revelation, and of a character calculated to administer no small consolation to the sincere believer. Excerpt from Notes and Illustrations of the Parables of the New Testament Arranged Tue first edition of this work having been taken up with a rapid sale, the author has been induced to revise and enlarge it, that he might increase its usefulness, and thereby carry into fuller effect the original purpose of its compilation. It has been his main object to attain the true sense and original application of the parables, which has been done, principally, by a careful study of the con text in each case, and by a comparison of the terms and metaphors with the same terms and metaphors as used in other parts Of the Scriptures. He hopes that, by this method, he has been successful in his attempts to develope the proper sense of the Sacred Writings, in those parts embraced in the design Of this work. Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament F the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's Notes on the Parables of the New Testament one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic teaching by comparison which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked and to bring out - what in these days it is especially meces sary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect-revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Excerpt from Notes and Illustrations of the Parables of the New-Testament: Arranged According to the Time in Which They Were Spoken I rejoice that you have bestowed on the third edition the fruit of your study and reflection, since its first appearance. It may not be improper to add, that this work has been prepared and published with the knowledge and encouragement of the respected booksellers, who possess the copy right of your Notes. There will be found, respected Brother, a close agreement between our application of the Parables. The principal difference is this: I have brought forward, in defence of the views we entertain, the testimony of commentators of various denominations; and I have endeavoured to make the Parables better understood, and account for the imagery used in many of them, by a reference to the laws, customs and habits of the eastern nations. I regret that I have not been able to attain this part of my object to a fuller extent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
