Merimee says, "I arrived in New Mexico from Portland, Oregon, May 1, 1970. First contact with the ground was a grocery store parking lot where we all were making bologna and green chile sandwiches. Nothing ever tasted so good, white Wonder bread and all. My bare leg and foot sunned while the other remained in the car. I was following directions to stay with the stuff. My car mates also were escapees from the Pacific NW: two Viet Nam vets, a girlfriend of theirs, their pot connection, me, and two dogs. I was looking for my friends who had settled in El Rito the previous year. That was forty-three years ago now, more than half a life-time." I've raised a large family, taught thousands of students, and written pretty steadily since 1964, first in years of journals sadly long gone, and now in poems and stories. The wonderful writers' community in Albuquerque holds me here as much as my family and grand-kids do. Notes on Serenity is a living collection of writings about addiction in my family, and in our country."

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Countless people around the world have prayed this prayer, and it has helped them find peace in the midst of their harried lives. Did you know that the above words are just the beginning of a longer prayer? In this book, beloved pastor and teacher Trevor Hudson explores the entire Serenity Prayer, giving insights into each phrase and making the prayer accessible to everyday people. He looks at the prayer from a Christian perspective, sharing his own experiences with addiction but broadening the book to address the struggles that come to all of us, regardless of whether we are in recovery. Hudson addresses addictions that differ from the stereotypical, such as eating compulsively, overworking, or filling one's life with religious activity. He challenges you to make this prayer part of your daily devotions and to pray it with others. Each brief chapter contains a single-paragraph summary called "In a Nutshell." Hudson then poses a thought-provoking question or suggestion for reflection and ends with a scripture passage related to the chapter topic. Learn how this simple prayer can transform your life, bringing peace into even the messiest situations.

An overview of Daoist texts on passive meditation from the Latter Han through Tang periods. Stephen Eskildsen offers an overview of Daoist religious texts from the Latter Han (25–220) through Tang (618–907) periods, exploring passive meditation methods and their anticipated effects. These methods entailed observing the processes that unfold spontaneously within mind and body, rather than actively manipulating them by means common in medieval Daoist religion such as visualization, invocations, and the swallowing of breath or saliva. Through the resulting deep serenity, it was claimed, one could attain profound insights, experience visions, feel surges of vital force, overcome thirst and hunger, be cured of ailments, ascend the heavens, and gain eternal life. While the texts discussed follow the legacy of Warring States period Daoism such as the Laozi to a significant degree, they also draw upon medieval immortality methods and Buddhism. An understanding of the passive meditation literature provides important insights into the subsequent development of Neidan, or Internal Alchemy, meditation that emerged from the Song period onward.

Although Film Studies has successfully (re)turned attention to matters of style and interpretation, its sibling discipline has left the territory uncharted - until now. The question of how television operates on a stylistic level has been critically underexplored, despite being fundamental to our viewing experience. This significant new work redresses a vital gap in Television Studies by engaging with the stylistic dynamics of TV; exploring the aesthetic properties and values of both the medium and particular types of output (specific programmes); and raising important questions about the way we judge television as both cultural artifact and art form. Television Aesthetics and Style provides a unique and vital intervention in the field, raising key questions about television's artistic properties and possibilities. Through a series of case-studies by internationally renowned scholars, the collection takes a radical step forward in understanding TV's stylistic achievements.
