Excerpt from A Study of a Child Lowell says: We were designed in the cradle, per haps earlier, and it is in finding out this design and shaping ourselves to it that our years are spent wisely. It is the vain endeavor to make ourselves what we are not that has strewn history with so many broken pur poses and lives left in the rough. Dr. Harris, United States Commissioner of Education, says parents and teachers are directly concerned with the aggregation Of facts of value gathered by child students, and from which is being evolved a new edu cation, which deals ih explanations which are the key note to infant development. Excerpt from Notes Early Training of Children For the average parents the great educational thinkers seem to have existed in vain the wisdom of Plato, with its perennial freshness and beauty, the noble ideal of Milton, the excellent sense of Locke, the originality of Rousseau, the loving insight of Pestalozzi, the abundant thought and suggestiveness of modern writers on education, are guiding lights which exist not for them. They are at no trouble to settle which definition of education is most satisfactory to them, they are not oppressed by the importance of the subject with which they have to deal. The child belongs to them; its relations to society and humanity do not come within the scope of their thought. They gather up, in some sort of fashion, the cur rent ideas of their time with regard to the bringing up of children, and they act upon these. If they are well-to-do, a conventional care and treatment8 Notes on tne E arty Training of a'ta'ron. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Child-Study, 1911, Vol. 4: The Journal of the Child-Study Society Life is a skill, an art like a handicraft, and true knowledge is a form of will. I have been asked to read a paper on the recreational activities of adolescent girls, and before commencing I must define the scope of my paper. I take it that what is expected of me is not a discourse on recreational activities in general, but on such recreational activities as involve chie y muscular movements, I am to exclude such activities as are primarily, or chie y, intellectual. But with regard to the other factor in my subject, adolescent girls, I propose to consider the young girl, whether she be the fortunate child of well-to-do parents, the elementary schoolgirl, or the poor little waif who has been mercifully brought into an institution, whether that institution be reformatory school, hospital, or even prison. Excerpt from Outlines of Child Study: A Manual for Parents and Teachers It is a privilege to introduce to those unacquainted with it one aspect of the work of the Federation for Child Study. Of all the organizations which have sought to stimulate parents to study and know their children, the Federation has had probably the most experience. For over a score of years its leaders have been guiding the reading and discussion of groups of, parents and teachers, but especially of parents. Upon their experience are based these Outlines of Child Study. The arrangement is topical; and each topic is presented by (1) a statement of the general state of knowledge of the topic, (2) an outline which lists the detailed facts and problems concerning which there is information available, and (3) a list of helpfully graded references, ranging from attractive popular articles to technical monographs. The treatment is comprehensive, both in the topics chosen and in the outline and references for each. Especially valuable are the sections on concrete aspects of human behavior, such as Toys, Manners, The Use of Money, Pets and Plants, and Hobbies, which the ordinary manuals of Child Study have relatively neglected. The treatment is modem; mental tests, psycho-analysis and the conditioned reflex receiving due (some conservative critics may think, undue) attention, and recent work in all lines being considered.
