Beginning in 1769, Norwich inhabitants began fire protection with the use of water buckets and a hand-actuated piston pump named the Torrent. In the early 1800s, the need for an organized fire service paved the way for the first fire companies of the downtown area. A period of rapid growth followed, and the Norwich Fire Department absorbed the Greeneville Fire Department under one title and one chief. Today the career firefighters of the Norwich Fire Department continue to build upon its rich and historic tradition of service to the City Consolidated District. Norwich Firefighting is a pictorial tribute to this honorable department.

Located at the confluence of the Yantic, Shetucket, and Thames Rivers, Norwich is known as the "Rose of New England." As a major seaport, it grew into a powerful manufacturing city due to its location on power-producing rivers. Yankee industrialists produced fine cotton, leather, brass, thermoses, and firearms. Self-sustaining villages developed around factories such as the Ponemah Mill, the Yantic Woolen Mill, and the Falls Mill. Vintage postcards from the 19th and 20th centuries depict the many sides of Norwich through images of its ways of life, places of worship, and social organizations.

Norwich State Hospital (NSH), established in 1904, was more than just a series of mortar and brick buildings to house and treat persons suffering from mental illness. For nearly 100 years, generations of people dedicated their careers and lives to developing NSH as a humanitarian community for mental illness rehabilitation. NSH gained international attention from some of the world's most renowned psychiatrists for being the first state hospital to boast a brand-new state-of-the-art building to house all occupational therapies under one roof. Although NSH closed in 1996, the structure has continued to be one of Connecticut's most notable historical landmarks, despite its ongoing demolition and redevelopment. Today, Norwich State Hospital is still alive in the timeless, emotional memories employees and family members share of what it was like to work and grow up in a place where employees were not just employees and patients were not just patients; they were family.

In 1830, the state legislature called on town leaders to "form a Fire Company to work a fire engine for the protection of buildings" in Willimantic. By 1832, the Willimantic Fire Engine Company had purchased an engine known as the "Deluge" and began a rich tradition of service to the people of Willimantic. Over the years, various fire companies were formed. From hand-drawn to horse-drawn to motorized equipment, and from loosely organized volunteers to highly professional career firefighters, the Willimantic Fire Department has provided citizens with skilled, trained, and compassionate service. Through photographs, memorabilia, and stories--the majority of which were collected by the firefighters themselves--Firefighting in Willimantic recognizes the traditions and accomplishments of this outstanding department.
