South Carolina's progress has been continually hindered by the handicap of bad roads, but with a live organization campaigning for a state highway system, the State is in a fair way to put itself on an equal footing with the other Southern States which are engaged in a tremendous program of road construction. Lenoir County Progressive in Highway Work EALIZING the many benefits to be derived from R a system of good roads, Lenoir County has put her shoulder to the wheel and has gone to work with a vim to improve the county system of roads. In order to provide the necessary finances for an undertaking of this magnitude, a bond issue of $2,000,000 was authorized by a Special Act of the General Assembly of the Session of 1919. These bonds were duly sold and actual construction begun. Ani agreement was made between the Board of Road Commissioners of Lenior County and the State Highway ("ommission whereby Federal Aid funds to the amount of $250,000 were allotted to the county to be used in the construction of the section of the Goldsboro-Newbern Highway through Lenoir. This amount was in addition to the $10,000 previously allotted on the link of the highway, 1.78 miles inl length, between Kinston and Hines Junction. The stretch of highway to be constructed with the assistance of Federal Aid was divided into three projects, namely, No. 49, No. 53, and No. 60, these three together with project number 11 constitutirl; the link from the Craven county line to the Vaync county line, via Kinston. Federal Aid Project No. 53 begins at the Vayne County linc and extends towards Kinston for a distance of 7.23 miles.
