A major player in the country's development, Norfolk County possesses a unique history, one that reflects the many challenges and accomplishments that America has experienced since the country's birth in the late eighteenth century. The county's citizens have weathered a variety of storms, both natural and manmade, ranging from hurricanes, floods, British occupation and attacks, Federal occupation, and aggressive civic annexation, and have created a beautiful and useful landscape, appealing to both the artist's eye and industrialist's practicality. This volume, with over 200 black-and-white images, takes readers into one of the Tidewater region's most historic locations and into an age made memorable by its unpaved roads, its early streetcars and horse-drawn wagons, its lively waterfront district on the Elizabeth River, and its emerging cityscape bordered by picturesque dairy farms. A rare visual journey, Norfolk County explores, through word and image, the area's diverse past, touching upon many elements of everyday life, including scenes of early one-room schoolhouses, historic churches, well-known industries, lush countrysides, and life along the river, as well as capturing vintage views of Great Bridge, Deep Creek, and the Great Dismal Swamp.

Despite the fact that the rural commuter belts of cities are major loci of population change, economic growth and dynamic social change within city regions, most research tends to ignore this area while focusing on the built-up city core. However, with the current emphasis on the role of rural areas in policy debates, it is vital to recognize the importance of the 'commuter belt'. By comparing four major European cities (in England, France, Germany and Spain), this book offers the first comparative investigation of the dynamism of city rural hinterlands. It assesses whether rural areas will become effectively integrated into quality of life improvements as a result of their inter-dependencies with cities, focusing on the critical arenas of employment change, housing and service provision. In doing so, it investigates how change in these three fields impact on the quality of life and physical environment of rural hinterlands.

Incorporated amidst the turmoil of the American Revolution, Foxborough has a long tradition of patriotic commitment to the nation and has continued from generation to generation to serve admirably when the country has called. However, it is not only the wartime record that measures a community, but it is a town's innovations and responses to times of prosperity and catastrophe that truly shape its character and reputation. Foxborough's varied history, from Minute Men to the famed female straw hat braiders, certainly distinguishes it as an uncommon town in the American experience. Foxborough: Gem of Norfolk County chronicles the remarkable story of a small village's growth and development from its first settlement in the 1600s to the present, highlighting significant events and personalities that formed the town's identity. Through this unique comprehensive narrative, readers will be transported across four centuries of a changing landscape and will explore their hometown's schools, residences, businesses, and factories of yesteryear.
