Plasma neutralization of an intense ion pulse is of interest for many applications, including plasma lenses, heavy ion fusion, cosmic ray propagation, etc. An analytical electron fluid model has been developed to describe the plasma response to a propagating ion beam. The model predicts very good charge neutralization during quasi-steady-state propagation, provided the beam pulse duration [tau]{sub b} is much longer than the electron plasma period 2[pi]/[omega]{sub p}, where [omega]{sub p} = (4[pi]e2n{sub p}/m)12 is the electron plasma frequency and n{sub p} is the background plasma density. In the opposite limit, the beam pulse excites large-amplitude plasma waves. If the beam density is larger than the background plasma density, the plasma waves break. Theoretical predictions are compared with the results of calculations utilizing a particle-in-cell (PIC) code. The cold electron fluid results agree well with the PIC simulations for ion beam propagation through a background plasma. The reduced fluid description derived in this paper can provide an important benchmark for numerical codes and yield scaling relations for different beam and plasma parameters. The visualization of numerical simulation data shows complex collective phenomena during beam entry and exit from the plasma.

The text presented here is an extended english version of a report by the authors which appeared in April 1983 at the Institute of Cosmical Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in German. It covers several selected topics on nonlinear wave-plasma interactio,ll in a treatment based on a hydrodynamic plasma description. Thus, no attempt has been made to give a comprehensive view on all aspects of the interaction of strong electromagnetic waves with plasmas. The text is partly introductory and presents partly current results. The authors hope that it will be of interest to students and scientists not only in the field of plasma physics. The authors thank Akademie-Verlag, Berlin and Birkhiiuser-Verlag, Basel for their encouragement to prepare the English manuscript and Mrs. Ch. Geier for carefully typing the final off-set version. Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Handbook on Plasma Instabilities, Volume 3, is primarily intended to serve as a sourcebook for obtaining quick information and literature references pertaining to a specific topic. Such a handbook has to be formulated in a way that enables understanding of any one section without requiring full understanding of any other section. Volume 1 (Chapters 1-13) presents the fundamental concepts of plasma physics with applications, and has more the nature of a textbook treating basic plasma physics, containment, waves, and macroscopic instabilities. Volume 2 (Chapters 14-17) covers various aspects of microinstabilities, beam plasma systems, stabilization methods, and parametric effects. The present volume (Chapters 18-22) starts with a discussion on feedback and dynamic stabilization using parametric and other effects. It then treats nonlinear effects and laser-plasma systems. One chapter is devoted to applications and use of instabilities. It concludes with a report on plasma waves and instabilities in cosmic space.

Nonlinear excitation of electron plasma and ion acoustic waves in an isotropic electron-ion plasma has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. A parametric theory based on a fluid description of the plasma taking into account the vector characters of the pumping and driven waves is developed which displays the directional characteristic of the threshold. A transmission line equivalent circuit is used to represent a plasma slab from which the ratio of the E fields of an E-polarized incident electromagnetic wave to the electron plasma wave inside the plasma at a Tonks-Dattner resonance is ascertained. Experiments are conducted on argon and mercury plasmas in C-Band waveguides with C.W. and pulsed microwaves. The minimum threshold microwave power observed is 10 Watts. Pulsed experiments show details of suppression of spontaneous oscillations in the plasma and subsequent excitation of ion acoustic waves. The dependence of the threshold microwave power on background plasma parameters is in qualitative agreement with theory. (Author).
