This book explains the principles and techniques of microwave physiological sensing and introduces fundamental results of the noninvasive sensing of physiological signatures, vital signs, as well as life detection. Specifically, noninvasive microwave techniques for contact, contactless, and remote sensing of circulatory and respiratory movements and physiological volume changes are discussed. Noninvasive Physiological Measurement: Wireless Microwave Sensing, is written by a pioneering researcher in microwave noninvasive physiological sensing and leading global expert in microwaves in biology and medicine. The book reviews current advances in noninvasive cardiopulmonary sensing technology and measurement. It includes measurements of the vital signs and physiological signatures from laboratory and clinical testing. The book discusses the applicable domains and scenarios in which there is an interaction of radio frequency (RF) and microwaves with biological matter in gas, fluid, or solid form, both from inside and outside of the human or animal body. The book also provides examples for healthcare monitoring and diagnostic applications through wearables, devices, or remote contactless sensors for physiological signals and signature, vital signs, and body motion sensing. This book is an essential guide to understanding the human body’s interaction with microwaves and noninvasive physiological sensing and monitoring. This book is intended for researchers and professionals in biomedical, electrical, and computer engineering with an interest in antenna, sensors, microwaves, signal processing, and medical applications. It will also be of interest to healthcare professionals, technologists, and practitioners interested in noninvasive physiological sensing and patient monitoring.

Neonatal Physiological Measurements documents the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Fetal and Neonatal Physiological Measurements. The book is organized into eight parts. The papers in Part I deal with general topics on the monitoring of newborn infants. Part II presents studies on cerebral hemodynamics. Part III focuses on blood gas analysis. Part IV examines respiratory measurements while Part V presents investigations into sudden infant death syndrome. Part VII covers applications of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Part VIII takes up neonatal monitoring technologies for developing countries. Part VIII, the Appendix, contains two keynote speeches. The first discusses the measurement of human umbilical venous blood flow in utero. The second paper discusses the measurement of fetal heart rate variation.

The Physiological Measurement Handbook presents an extensive range of topics that encompass the subject of measurement in all departments of medicine. The handbook describes the use of instruments and techniques for practical measurements required in medicine. It covers sensors, techniques, hardware, and software as well as information on processing systems, automatic data acquisition, reduction and analysis, and their incorporation for diagnosis. Suitable for both instrumentation designers and users, the handbook enables biomedical engineers, scientists, researchers, students, health care personnel, and those in the medical device industry to explore the different methods available for measuring a particular physiological variable. It helps readers select the most suitable method by comparing alternative methods and their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the book provides equations for readers focused on discovering applications and solving diagnostic problems arising in medical fields not necessarily in their specialty. It also includes specialized information needed by readers who want to learn advanced applications of the subject, evaluative opinions, and possible areas for future study.

Noninvasive medical diagnosis (NIMD) is as old as medical practice itself. From the earliest healers' observations of odors, skin color, and breath sounds to today's wealth of technologies, the basics remain the same and keep the role of NIMD essential to effective medical care. The desire to improve muscle function and prevent overuse injuries from exercise and throughout training has led to the development of various methods to aid recovery and track readiness to perform. Ergogenic aids such as cold-water immersion, massage, and dynamic recovery procedures may have positive effects but the results of the related research remain equivocal. Furthermore, novel interventions in this scenario, like compression garments, ice vests, and photobiomodulation therapy are promising but need more evidence-based data to support their effectiveness. Similarly, to properly monitor individual physical conditioning, there is a growing interest toward unobtrusive measures to accurately represent physiological status during and/or after exercise. There are several techniques being used, such as subjective ratings of well-being, heart rate monitoring, hormonal and hematological profile assessments. However, more sensitive indexes like heart rate variability and muscle activation (voluntary and/or involuntary) are arising as attractive alternatives that may delineate physical conditioning status and readiness to perform more precisely than the aforementioned measures. The purpose of this Research Topic is to critically evaluate and summarize recent data from observational and intervention studies related to non-invasive methods designed to promote recovery and objectively monitor training status. Their association to physical performance and physiological recovery in athletes during training and competition is a major focus of this Topic.
