NMR Spectroscopy of the Non-Metallic Elements Stefan Berger Philipps-Universität, Marburg, Germany Siegmar Braun Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, Germany Hans-Otto Kalinowski Justus-Liebig-Universität, Gießen, Germany In recent years, the technique of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy has rapidly gained in importance outside its traditional areas of proton NMR and carbon-13 NMR. In particular, it has become much more applicable to compounds containing elements such as phosphorus, nitrogen and fluorine. NMR Spectroscopy of the Non-Metallic Elements gathers together a wealth of NMR data for the most important non-metallic elements, namely nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, phosphorus, sulphur and xenon. For each element, the data for the simpler compounds and their derivatives (both organic and inorganic) are gathered together in as complete a form as possible, and the regularities that emerge are discussed in detail in relation to structural variations. This allows the reader to interpret the structure of more complex structures. The chapters containing the NMR data for the elements are preceded by a practical introduction to the basic theory and experimental techniques of the NMR parameters, especially the chemical shift and indirect spin-spin coupling. This material will help the reader both in finding practical solutions to problems of structure determination, and in critically evaluating the spectra obtained. NMR Spectroscopy of the Non-Metallic Elements is an invaluable reference source for all laboratories where NMR is used. It will also be widely used by organic and inorganic chemists, especially those working on nitrogen, fluorine and phosphorus compounds.

Download Chemistry of the Non-Metallic Elements Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Chemistry of the Non-Metallic Elements is concerned with the non-metals and is to be read in conjunction with The Chemistry of the Metallic Elements by D. M. McC. Steele. The object has not been to provide an encyclopedic coverage of all the chemical reactions of non-metals but rather to select those which will enable the student to appreciate better the similarities and differences between the elements. The book discusses the chemistry of the non-metals in relation to their positions in the periodic groups. It covers the noble gases, hydrogen, the halogens, Group VIB, oxygen, sulfur, Group VB, nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon. Where the groups contain metals, as in Group IVA, their chemistry is briefly discussed to show the properties which occur. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of chemistry at the intermediate level, that is, the sixth-form/first-year university level. Readers are assumed to have a background of O-level chemistry and of O- or A-level physics and a working knowledge of elementary mathematics.

Keeping mathematics to a minimum, this book introduces nuclear properties, nuclear screening, chemical shift, spin-spin coupling, and relaxation. It is one of the few books that provides the student with the physical background to NMR spectroscopy from the point of view of the whole of the periodic table rather than concentrating on the narrow applications of 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Aids to structure determination, such as decoupling, the nuclear Overhauser effect, INEPT, DEPT, and special editing, and two dimensional NMR spectroscopy are discussed in detail with examples, including the complete assignment of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of D-amygdain. The authors examine the requirements of a modern spectrometer and the effects of pulses and discuss the effects of dynamic processes as a function of temperature or pressure on NMR spectra. The book concludes with chapters on some of the applications of NMR spectroscopy to medical and non-medical imaging techniques and solid state chemistry of both I = F1/2 and I > F1/2 nuclei. Examples and problems, mainly from the recent inorganic/organometallic chemistry literature support the text throughout. Brief answers to all the problems are provided in the text with full answers at the end of the book.

Download NMR Spectroscopy in Pharmaceutical Analysis Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
For almost a decade, quantitative NMR spectroscopy (qNMR) has been established as valuable tool in drug analysis. In all disciplines, i. e. drug identification, impurity profiling and assay, qNMR can be utilized. Separation techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, super fluid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis techniques, govern the purity evaluation of drugs. However, these techniques are not always able to solve the analytical problems often resulting in insufficient methods. Nevertheless such methods find their way into international pharmacopoeias. Thus, the aim of the book is to describe the possibilities of qNMR in pharmaceutical analysis. Beside the introduction to the physical fundamentals and techniques the principles of the application in drug analysis are described: quality evaluation of drugs, polymer characterization, natural products and corresponding reference compounds, metabolism, and solid phase NMR spectroscopy for the characterization drug substances, e.g. the water content, polymorphism, and drug formulations, e.g. tablets, powders. This part is accompanied by more special chapters dealing with representative examples. They give more detailed information by means of concrete examples. Combines theory, techniques, and concrete applications—all of which closely resemble the laboratory experience Considers international pharmacopoeias, addressing the concern for licensing Features the work of academics and researchers, appealing to a broad readership

Download Modern NMR Approaches to the Structure Elucidation of Natural Products Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The Ghanian plant Cryptolepis sanguinolenta is the source of a series of fascinating indoloquinoline alkaloids. The most unusual member of this alkaloid series was initially proposed to be a spiro nonacyclic structure, named cryptospirolepine, and was elucidated in 1993 based on the technologies available at that time. There were, however, several annoying attributes to the structure that bothered analysts for the ensuing 22 years. During the two decades that followed the initial work there have been enormous developments in NMR technology. Using new experimental approaches, specifically homodecoupled 1,1- and 1,n-HD-ADEQUATE NMR experiments developed in 2014, the structure of only a 700 µg sample of cryptospirolepine has been revised and is shown on the cover of this volume. The confluence of the NMR technological and methodological advances that allowed the revision of the structure of cryptospirolepine using a submilligram sample seems a fitting example for this book, which is dedicated to the NMR characterization of various classes of natural products. Volume 2 considers data processing and algorithmic based analyses tailored to natural product structure elucidation and reviews the application of NMR to the analysis of a series of different natural product families including marine natural products, terpenes, steroids, alkaloids and carbohydrates. Volume 1 discusses contemporary NMR approaches including optimized and future hardware and experimental approaches to obtain both the highest quality and most appropriate spectral data for analysis. These books, bringing together acknowledged experts, uniquely focus on the combination of experimental approaches and modern hardware and software applied to the structure elucidation of natural products. The volumes will be an essential resource for NMR spectroscopists, natural product chemists and industrial researchers working on natural product analysis or the characterization of impurities and degradation products of pharmaceuticals that can be as scarce as natural product samples.

Download Applied NMR Spectroscopy for Chemists and Life Scientists Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
From complex structure elucidation to biomolecular interactions - this applicationoriented textbook covers both theory and practice of modern NMR applications. Part one sets the stage with a general description of NMR introducing important parameters such as the chemical shift and scalar or dipolar couplings. Part two describes the theory behind NMR, providing a profound understanding of the involved spin physics, deliberately kept shorter than in other NMR textbooks, and without a rigorous mathematical treatment of all the physico-chemical computations. Part three discusses technical and practical aspects of how to use NMR. Important phenomena such as relaxation, exchange, or the nuclear Overhauser effects and the methods of modern NMR spectroscopy including multidimensional experiments, solid state NMR, and the measurement of molecular interactions are the subject of part four. The final part explains the use of NMR for the structure determination of selected classes of complex biomolecules, from steroids to peptides or proteins, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates. For chemists as well as users of NMR technology in the biological sciences.
