Excerpt from Niles's School History of the United States In the preparation of this volume, my aim has been to include only those events which should be known to every citizen, together with such other matter as might have a tendency to deepen impressions, to broaden the view, or add to the interest. I have tried to make all statements clear and accurate; to treat the subject in such a manner as will leave the student with an abiding thirst for wider historical reading. So far as seemed possible, in a work of this grade, the relation of cause and effect has been kept in view, and it is believed that all who carefully study these pages will see that history is made up of related events. In speaking of the measures of political parties, and other organizations, I have endeavored to lift myself above prejudice; to give plain, uncolored statements. Some space has been given to the men who dwelt here before us, but much more to the every-day life of our own people, in different sections of our country, and at different periods of our history. The great inventions of the last hundred years have been noticed, and their marvelous influence more fully traced than is usual in works of this class; and care has been taken to convey the idea that the bloodless triumphs of peace are really as much a part of our country's history as are the triumphs of war. To awaken the spirit of patriotism is regarded as one of the ends to be reached in the study of history. Keeping this fact in view, the stirring words of our great poets have been introduced, to supplement or round out the stories of patriotism told in simple prose. The heroes of the home, the hospital, the flood, and the field, men and women alike, have been placed side by side - bright examples for the young to follow. It is believed that the use of the topics prepared for recitations and reviews, the test questions and exercises near the close of the book, will lead to the best results. Such a method of study and work as is here outlined places the pupil in the proper mental attitude, trains to self-reliance, gives a clear understanding of the subject, and a good command of language. Excerpt from Outline and Notes on United States History To furnish the student the method and material of thought which shall yield the highest discipline and culture, is not an easy task. Shall the outline present the logical relations of the sub ject, or shall the student be required to discover them After the Introduction, the thinking and organization of the subject 18 done mainly by the student the work of the teacher being directive. Excerpt from Juvenile American History, for Primary Schools While the leading outlines of the following work, after Part First, are essentially the same as in' the Second Book, or History of the United States, yet the filling up is materially different - consisting mostly of those illustrative and morally instructive incidents which give to history the charm of romance, without its falsity. The work is designed, especially, to interest the young in the subject of which it treats, and thereby to prepare the way for farther and more impor tant acquisitions in the general details and philosophy of our history. Excerpt from History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: No; II., Or Uncle Philip's Conversations With the Children About New-York I send you now some farther conversations which I have had with the children about the his tory of our own country; and when you print these, I hope that all the little boys and girls in America will be as much pleased with them as the young companions of your old uncle seemed to be while we were talking. We have this time been talking about the History of our own state, N ew York; and I suppose that my young friends were pleased, because we were speaking of many things that occurred upon the very same soil upon which we now walk. At any rate, they seemed happy, and I was contented to amuse and instruct them. I am very glad that they are all so much pleased with the study of history, for it will be a useful pleasure to them. You know, too, that no man is well educated unless he has studied the history of the world, and particularly the his tory of his own country. So I am delighted that the children are all determined, in this particular, to be well educated.vni preface. Excerpt from Broad Stripes and Bright Stars: Stories of American History Each story has a central character from history as its hero who played a part, begin ning often with youth, in our development as a free country. The children who read the stories will feel and understand our history as the men who made it did. Through this appeal to the imagination, boys and girls of today are inspired to follow lines of right conduct and to achieve as our ancestors did. They are helped to understand the drama of present national events in terms of our valiant historical past. They feel an urge to be, themselves, a part of our history tomorrow. Excerpt from Ates Short America, of the United of Beginners Careful observers of our public schools are well aware that the average limit of school age is not above thirteen or fourteen years. Within that period pupils are expected to learn to read, to write, and to spell; to have a fair acquaintance with numbers and with geography; and to be able to express themselves with some facility in the ordinary forms of composition. If, there fore, the majority of children in America are to learn anything of their country's history While they are in school, they should have it brought to their attention in some other form than is common. Excerpt from American History for Little Folks This little volume is intended to be a supplementary reading-book on American history for use in the third grade of our public schools, and for other boys and girls from ten to twelve years of age. A few of the more dramatic and picturesque events in the history of our country are here presented in a simple and easy style. They have much of human interest, and are full of action. Professor Hinsdale, in his "How to Study and Teach History," well says that a bit of romance, poetry, anecdote, or story will often throw more light on a historical situation or let you deeper into a man's heart and life than a page of careful analysis or a laborious description. These stories rest on a historical basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
