Longlisted for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection Winner of the Raz/Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction, the stories in What Isn't Remembered explore the burden, the power, and the nature of love between people who often feel misplaced and estranged from their deepest selves and the world, where they cannot find a home. The characters yearn not only to redefine themselves and rebuild their relationships but also to recover lost loves--a parent, a child, a friend, a spouse, a partner. A young man longs for his mother's love while grieving the loss of his older brother. A mother's affair sabotages her relationship with her daughter, causing a lifelong feud between the two. A divorced man struggles to come to terms with his failed marriage and his family's genocidal past while trying to persuade his father to start cancer treatments. A high school girl feels responsible for the death of her best friend, and the guilt continues to haunt her decades later. Evocative and lyrical, the tales in What Isn't Remembered uncover complex events and emotions, as well as the unpredictable ways in which people adapt to what happens in their lives, finding solace from the most surprising and unexpected sources.

EPIC Award Winning Series "Author C. Hope Clark brings to life . . . endearing and strong-minded characters that linger in your mind long after the last page is turned." --New York Times bestselling author Karen White Beneath an idyllic veneer of Southern country charm, the town of Newberry hides secrets that may have led to murder. When a local landowner's body, with pants down, is found near Tarleton's Tea Table Rock--a notorious rendezvous spot, federal investigator Carolina Slade senses a chance to get back into the field again. Just as she discovers what might be a nasty pattern of fraud and blackmail, her petty boss reassigns her fledgling case to her close friend and least qualified person in their office. Forced to coach an investigation from the sidelines, Slade struggles with the twin demons of professional jealousy and unplanned pregnancy. Something is rotten in Newberry. Her personal life is spiraling out of control. She can't protect her co-worker. And Wayne Largo complicates everything when the feds step in after it becomes clear that Slade is right. One wrong move and Slade may lose everything. Yet it's practically out of her hands . . . unless she finds a way to take this case back without getting killed. Author C. Hope Clark, an award-winning writer of two mystery series (Carolina Slade and the Edisto Island mysteries), founded FundsforWriters.com, which Writer's Digest has recognized in its annual 101 Best Web Sites for Writers for almost two decades. Hope is married to a 30-year veteran of federal law enforcement, a Senior Special Agent, now a private investigator. They live in South Carolina, on the banks of Lake Murray. Hope is ever hard at work on the next novel, and you can visit her at chopeclark.com.

The Newberry Library in Chicago possesses one of the most distinguished collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscript books in North America. Based on two major private collections of the late nineteenth century—those of Henry Probasco and Edward E. Ayer—and scrupulously added to in this century, the holdings include late medieval bibles and breviaries, books of hours and books of homilies, and seminal texts on astronomy. Some of the books, such as those from the libraries of Philip the Good and Anne of Brittany, are beautifully illuminated. But the collection also includes an unusual array of "typical" medieval books, chosen not for their beauty but for their paleographical, codicological, and textual interest. Such codices include an eleventh-century Carthusian monk, and numerous books of hours adapted for feminine use. Paul Saenger has painstakingly identified the text, illumination, physical structure, and provenance for each of the more than 200 books in the collection to provide an exemplary guide to literate culture in the late Middle Ages. This catalogue, carefully researched and handsomely illustrated, will be an invaluable resource for historians, art historians, paleographers, bibliographers, and collectors.

Working at Philipp's 66 Gas Station across the grey cracked Newberry Indian Stadium, one saw a lot. In this book, Doc is me. I use the amalgam of Banned for a certain character in The Dark Knight. For our city, there was no Dark Night, or no Super Being to save us, only a black night of the soul. In this book I try to recollect the past of 72-82, my crusades, my fights, fears and loss. I have tried when in doubt to leave or change names about this jungle of nature. If you find yourself in the book, it is by fault and you should contact me to get a taste of the profits. Now to our story, our time, when we always tried to call or find a Dark Night in Newberry. This book also contains banned material I submitted to Major Publishers without successes. Why am I writing this 30 years gone by and most of the people in the story, I have never heard from since '82. They are statues in my Hall of Fame, they are legends, they are precious to me. As I try to re-create life, it kills me slowly. It sheds layers of my soul to you. Please handle this book with care and the ones who love you as well. Never forget them, never let the past leave you behind. I love you for even taking your precious time to try to follow me on this hell of a journey. Let the Dark Night find me once before it is too late! Author's Note: The thunder I hear is nothing to the storm coming, then and now. We were young, naïve, high and without a guide. Parents were well AWOL. This is not one of those I feel sorry for myself books. But if you don't cry, laugh, smile or love Newberry more or less, then I need to find a new soul, a new way. We all wanted to get out of Newberry, but Newberry won't let us be. The Dark Night looks upon us still and lets see what we might be. (Doc Banned Cole) July 24, 2012 I don't do Table of Contents, Newberry's No Show on a Dark Night Would Not Allow Doc to do it!
