Excerpt from New Orleans Medical News and Hospital Gazette, 1860, Vol. 6: A Monthly Journal If we were asked to define what respiration is, our answer is concise. In its simplest View, it is a mere inter change of gases, consisting of the passage of carbonic acid and water out of the system, by means of the lungs, and the inception of oxygen through the same organs. This function of respiration, to a certain extent removed from the control of the will, knows no intermission, has no cessation while life continues; taking the average number of respirations at 16 in the minute, the gases essential to the continuance of organic life have been renewed 360 times in an hour; in the course of twenty-four hours times, and in a single year have reached the enor mous amount of times. Excerpt from New Orleans Medical News and Hospital Gazette, 1858, Vol. 4: A Monthly Journal The symptoms of congestion were so marked in this patient, that I was almost inclined to suspect the existence of a beginning iritis with mom gation of congestion to the adjoining membranes, but the absence of lachrymation, and with the exception mentioned of all discoloration of the iris, the want of the characteristic dull pain, and the length of time the disease had existed without producing any of the usual visible signs of iritis, forbade the entertainment of this idea, and I was almost forced to the conclusion that I had to do with a case of congestive amblyopia' car ried to a high degree. The plan of treatment to be pursued was evident - I had to do with a case of chronic congestion - and an antiphlogistic course was indicated. Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, 1863, Vol. 2: A Journal of Medical Science, Literature, Criticism, and News In the House of Commons, Sir George Grey, in answer to a question put by Mr. Dawson, in reference to the case of Mary Ann Walkley, again stated that he did not think it would be possible to establish a system of registration and inspection applicable to workrooms in private houses. He would, how ever, willingly acquiesce ih the introduction of a bill by Mr. Dawson on the subject. Mr. Bagwell asked whether, if the deceased were an apprentice, as had been stated in the Timer, that fact would not enable the Government to prosecute her employers. Sir George Grey said it would depend on the facts of the case, with which he was not sufficiently acquainted to say whether there existed sufficient evidence to go before a jury. A long debate took place on the propriety of holding the court martial on Colonel Crawley in England. Objections were raised on the score of expense, but Government evidently intend to persevere in the course they have announced. Excerpt from New Orleans Medical News and Hospital Gazette, 1859, Vol. 5: A Monthly Journal According to Henle, N asse, and other distinguished hoematologists, the cause of the difference in color is rather to be found in the form of the corpuscles, affecting their power of transmitting and reflecting light, than in any chemical changes in the contents of the blood cells. If we dilute blood with water it assumes a dark red color, and then, under the micros cope, the blood corpuscles are evidently distended, they loose their discoid form and become spherical; the blood, collectively, must therefore appear darker, since each individual corpuscleihas become converted into a spheri cal mirror, from which the red rays are scattered and reflected. We observe the reverse on treating the blood with such substances as render the intercellular fluid relatively denser, there is then established an out ward current from the interior of the cell, in consequence of which it col lapses, the central depression becomes more considerable, land the individual cells resemble concave mirrors, from which the red rays are reflected with greater intensity. Scherer indicates another physical cause, viz.: the attenuation or thickening of the investing membrane. When the capsule becomes thinner by the expansion of the blood corpuscles, the pigment shines through more readily, producing a dark red appearance to the whole mass; when, on the contrary, the corpuscles are diminished, their capsules are thrown into folds, concealing the true color of the hoematine, and this imparts the brighter color to the blood. But Lehmann, who has given, at great length, all the opinions on this subject, says that it would be erroneous to attribute the different coloring of the blood solely to mechanical circumstances, and that chemical ia fluences cflect changes in the hue of the blood pigment itself, especially oxygen and carbonic acid.
