Excerpt from New Elements of Operative Surgery, Vol. 3 of 3: Carefully Revised, Entirely Remodelled, and Augmented With a Treatise on Minor Surgery While touching on this matter, we may remark, that in a case of this kind, and as an auxiliary to the screw-lever of Dr. Mott, the right masseter muscle was totally divided, and the left partially so, as early as the year 1840, by James R. Wood, M. D. Of this city. Complete success, however, did not reward the bold expedient of this skilful young surgeon, which, however, might possibly have been obtained if it had occurred to him to have adopted the ingenious te source of his preceptor, Dr. Mott, by severing also the pterygoid muscles. Excerpt from New Elements of Operative Surgery, Vol. 2 of 3: Carefully Revised, Entirely Remodeled, and Augmented With a Treatise on Minor Surgery II. Compression. - Process of M Sanson - Taking his idea from a process used for varicocele, and of which I will speak further on, M. Sanson (brioux, These No. 282, Paris, has proposed a sort of clasp 'or forceps, by means Of Which he has attempted to Oh literate the varicose veins of the legs. This forceps which the au thor (boinet, Gaz. Me'd. De Paris, 1836, p. Appears to have Often used with success, is not to bear on the vein itself. To ap ply it we endeavor to draw the vein into a fold of the integuments and place the bite of the instrument immediately below it. It re sults from this, that the vein is compressed by the Skin which per mits itself to be drawn and pulled backwards by the pressure Of the forceps. What I have said of the return Of the disease, after the use Of the seton or pin, sufficiently shows that this kind of com pression, though Simple and attended with but little danger, can not have much efficacy. For which reason, I have not thought it necessary to make trial of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
