Condition assessment and characterization of materials and structures by means of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods is a priority need around the world to meet the challenges associated with the durability, maintenance, rehabilitation, retrofitting, renewal and health monitoring of new and existing infrastructures including historic monuments. Numerous NDT methods that make use of certain components of the electromagnetic and acoustic spectrum are currently in use to this effect with various levels of success and there is an intensive worldwide research effort aimed at improving the existing methods and developing new ones. The knowledge and information compiled in this book captures the current state of the art in NDT methods and their application to civil and other engineering materials and structures. Critical reviews and advanced interdisciplinary discussions by world-renowned researchers point to the capabilities and limitations of the currently used NDT methods and shed light on current and future research directions to overcome the challenges in their development and practical use. In this respect, the contents of this book will equally benefit practicing engineers and researchers who take part in characterization, assessment and health monitoring of materials and structures.

This book provides readers with the latest know-how and tools needed to assess the in-service strength and reliability of welded structures. It addresses the two principal mechanisms of structural material deterioration, fatigue and corrosion, which affect the in-service behavior of structures. In this regard, the primary focus is on fatigue in connection with various structural failure scenarios. Realistic and typical examples of welded structures’ design and residual life assessment are used throughout the book in order to show readers the complexity of real-world assessments. The book offers a valuable resource for master’s students in mechanical and civil engineering, and for engineers whose work involves fatigue design and in-service inspections of welded structures.

Handbook of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metallic Structures

The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Fatigue of engineering materials is a very complicated process that is difficult to accurately describe and predict. It is no doubt nowadays, that a fatigue of real materials should be regarded as a random phenomenon and analyzed by use of stochastic theory. This volume of the lectures sumarises the latest achievements in stochastic modelling and analysis of fatigue. The lectures cover the following important aspects of modern analysis of fatigue: methodology of stochastic modelling of fatigue, tools for characterization of random fatigue loads, physical and mechanical aspects of random fatigue, basic stochastic models for fatigue and the estimation of fatigue reliability of specific structural systems.

With the advent of the 80's there has been an increasing need for analytic and numerical techniques, based on a thorough understanding of microstructural processes, that express in a manner suitable for practicing engineers the reliability of components and structures that are being subjected to degradation situations. Such situations fall within the framework offracture mechanics, fatigue, corrosion fatigue and pitting corrosion. Luckily, such techniques are now being developed and it was felt timely to combine in one volume reports by the leaders in this field who are currently making great strides towards solving these problems. Hence the idea of this monograph was born and I am pleased to be associated both with it and the contributors whose chapters are included in this volume. A very large part of the credit for this monograph must go to the authors who have taken time out from their busy schedules to prepare their submissions. They have all worked diligently over the last few months in order to get their manuscripts to me on time and I sincerely thank them for their help throughout the preparation of this volume.
