Throughout the history of humankind, man has been searching for cures for his many ailments. No doubt, many of our modern ailments are brought about by a libertine lifestyle, coupled with a lack of faith and weakness of belief in our Creator. The Prophet Muhammad (S) was sent as a guide, and mercy for all of humankind, and as such was given wisdom by Allah that is beneficial to humanity. The medicine of the Prophet (S) is not restricted to spiritual healing alone. In fact, it balances the healing of the soul and the physical body in order to prepare man for a better life in the Hereafter. The Prophets deliver remedies that cure the heart from whatever afflicts it. These Prophetic remedies strengthen the heart and increase the reliance and dependence on Allah. They also also aid in seeking refuge, being humble and showing meekness before Him, begging Him, giving charity and supplicating to Him. It includes repenting to Allah, seeking His forgiveness, practicing kindness towards His creation and aiding those in desperate need and those who have suffered a calamity. These cures have been tried by various nations who have found them to carry the cure that doctors can never prescribe on their own, whether by experimentation or scientific observations. Prophetic cures are found to be more powerful than any type of regular medicine. The hearts that are connected with the Lord of the Worlds - the Creator of the illness and its cure and He Who governs the affairs of everything and everyone -require special types of remedies that are nothing like those required for the hearts that are far away from their Lord. Besides, whenever the soul and the heart become stronger (spiritually), they will cooperate to defeat the illness. We are privileged to present this book, Natural Medicine from the Sunnah, based on an extracted work of Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, to the readers in order to provide them with information, knowledge and wisdom in dealing with the numerous ailments that afflict us. Combining classical Arabic primary sources with an exhaustive survey of modern scientific studies, this encyclopedia features a multidisciplinary approach which should prove useful for both practitioners and followers of herbal medicine. Entries include each herb's botanical and alternate names, a summary of its "prophetic prescription," its properties and uses, and a guide to related contemporary scientific studies.

It would be somewhat of an understatement to assert that the notion of ars medicine has been substantially transformed from its classical definition as the art of healing. Practitioners of modern medicine would probably be more inclined to refer to themselves as practicing the science of medicine, dispatching all other forms of treatment to the shamanistic margins where abide “traditional,” “alternative,” or “complementary” medicines such as acupuncture, homeopathy, naturopathy, herbalism, and bush or tribal remedies. Then there is Islamic medicine, an altogether tricky term to pin down. Some belief it to be a comprehensive form of medicine based on a complete system of theory and practice. Others say it’s largely a medieval notion that has been abandoned by all but the most tribal Muslims as the Arab World moves inexorably into the 21st century. Still, others view it in prophetic terms, as having been crafted from the central religious text and core source of all knowledge in Islam, the Qur’an, with natural remedies for most ailments and specific prayers that must be recited for any disease to be conquered.

Through a dual engagement with the unconscious in psychoanalysis and Islamic theological-medical reasoning, Stefania Pandolfo’s unsettling and innovative book reflects on the maladies of the soul at a time of tremendous global upheaval. Drawing on in-depth historical research and testimonies of contemporary patients and therapists in Morocco, Knot of the Soul offers both an ethnographic journey through madness and contemporary formations of despair and a philosophical and theological exploration of the vicissitudes of the soul. Knot of the Soul moves from the experience of psychosis in psychiatric hospitals, to the visionary torments of the soul in poor urban neighborhoods, to the melancholy and religious imaginary of undocumented migration, culminating in the liturgical stage of the Qur’anic cure. Demonstrating how contemporary Islamic cures for madness address some of the core preoccupations of the psychoanalytic approach, she reveals how a religious and ethical relation to the “ordeal” of madness might actually allow for spiritual transformation. This sophisticated and evocative work illuminates new dimensions of psychoanalysis and the ethical imagination while also sensitively examining the collective psychic strife that so many communities endure today.
