The continuous effort to perform a more sustainable chemistry has led to the development of new materials that accomplish the principles of green chemistry. In this context, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have arisen as a new generation of solvents that respond well to most of the characteristics that an ideal green solvent must possess: they are easy and cheap to prepare, stable, easy to handle (they show chemical stability, non-flammability and conductivity), separable from the reaction products, biodegradable and safe for both humans and the environment. At the same time, they show chemical-physical properties similar to ionic liquids, such as low volatility, conductivity and high solvent power. These characteristics mean that DESs are today classified as 2-st century solvents. DESs have been raising a lot of attention and a sharp increase of their applications in numerous sectors of chemistry: they are mainly used as alternative solvents and/or catalysts for various organic transformations including metal-catalyzed reactions, biotransformations, polymerization, in sample preparation and analytical techniques as well as in the design of pharmaceutical formulations and drug delivery systems.

Download Deep Eutectic Solvents for Medicine, Gas Solubilization and Extraction of Natural Substances Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Initially considered as a sub-class of ionic liquids, eutectic mixtures are formed by mixtures of low cost, often biodegradable Lewis or Bronsted acids and bases. Eutectic mixtures have gathered a growing scientific interest by the academic and industrial communities as they are interesting for many applications ranging from metal processing to biomass treatment or pharmaceuticals. This volume gathers contributions by some of the most active research groups in the world using eutectic mixtures for applications in separation, extraction or pharmaceutical and medical applications. The different contributions aim at a large overview of the field for these particular applications by reviewing literature data and presenting ground breaking research in the different fields.

Download Deep Eutectic Solvents for Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book focuses on the properties of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and recent advances in their application in lignocellulosic biomass processing. Lignocellulosic biomass conversion to biofuels, biochemicals and other value-added products has attracted global attention because it is a readily available, inexpensive and renewable resource. However, in order for biomass technologies to be commercially viable, biomass recalcitrance needs to be cost-effectively reduced. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are new ‘green' solvents that have the high potential for biomass processing thanks to their low cost, low toxicity, biodegradability, and easy recycling and reuse. After an overview of the current lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment, the book discusses the synthesis and physiochemical properties of DESs, as well as key findings on the effects of DES on cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin solubilization, biomass pretreatment and biomass crystallinity. It then addresses the enzymatic hydrolysis performance of DES-pretreated solids, compatibility of DESs with enzymes and microorganisms, and the recycling potential of DESs. Lastly, it compares DESs with ionic liquids, and examines the challenges and opportunities relating to extending the use of DESs in lignocellulosic processing.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are pharmaceutically accepted systems not only because they typically offer a serious enhancement of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) solubility, but also due to their non-toxicity. This fortunate conjuncture allows for designing new media for escalation and controlled release of APIs. For example, composition optimisation of a series of NADES comprising choline chloride with multi-hydroxyl compounds was successfully performed for a set of sulphonamide-based drugs. These results confirmed that NADES in general, and the ones based on choline chloride and glycerol particularly, are an attractive alternative to traditional solvents for sulphonamide dissolution. Experiments augmented with in silico modelling can offer deeper insights into the thermodynamic characteristics of these systems and an explanation for the origin of the observed solubility enhancement. Research of this type offers universal resolutions to the problem of low solubility issues for many types of drugs. Of particular interest is that such screening is not restricted to artificial in vitro environments but can be also easily adopted for the study of modelled in vivo situations. One of very important and interesting examples is a new curcumin–NADES formulation preserving its beneficial properties even after dilution with FaSSIF solution, which mimicks intestinal absorption.
