This book examines the development and organization of the NBA and its clubs, how each club has performed in seasons and postseasons, and to what extent each has prospered and succeeded as a business enterprise despite competition for market share from other types of entertainment. Each chapter contains two core themes—Team Performance and Franchise Business. The former highlights how teams won division and conference titles and NBA championships while the latter analyzes and compares financial data including revenue, gate receipts, and operating income. The book also explores such things as when each franchise organized and why it joined the NBA, a brief profile of its current majority owner or ownership group, records of teams’ special coaches and players, attendances at home games, and how their arenas rank as venues for fans. This book explains why particular teams located in very large, large, midsized, or small markets win more games and titles than others and when and how frequently this occurs. In addition, it provides ways to individually—and by division or conference—compare basketball franchises from a financial perspective.

Written by authors who have real-world experience of leading teams and major projects, this book explores a new approach to project success: the continuous process of enabling and empowering teams to reach the optimal levels of performance. For decades, project managers have been asking the multi-million, and sometimes multi-billion-dollar question: why did the project fail? High project failure rates are nothing new and have been well documented, but when project professionals seek answers, they usually return to the original project plan to identify flaws. Yet there is one place where most don't look for the answers: the people. Here is the value gap of the almost untouched area of project team performance management that has the potential to be the next quantum leap in project success. PMO leaders, change executives, HR professionals, project managers, program managers, and portfolio managers – anyone who leads a team in the project world – will learn how to make this critical investment for any organization which wishes to thrive in the ‘new normal’ project-based economy.

The Committee reported previously on domestic football governance in July 2011 (7th report of session 2010-12, HC 792-I, ISBN 9780215561114) after concerns were expressed by supporters and commentators about the sufficiency of checks and balances on financial management in football, as well as wider failures of governance. The report concluded that the Football Association - English football's governing body - was in need of urgent reform. The Committee said the leagues - especially the Premier League - had too great an influence over the decision-making processes of the Football Association. In particular the Committee was concerned that increasing commercialisation of the game, coupled with a lack of financial regulation, was leading to significant financial risk-taking among football clubs that threatens the game. The Committee has been very disappointed by the football authorities' response to its proposals for reform. While progress has been achieved, further reform is needed, especially in relation to the licensing model, the failure to ensure that membership of the Main Board, Council and influential committees is fully representative and balances interests adequately, and the way in which supporter engagement will operate at club level. Most fundamentally, the financial proposals were hugely disappointing, with the only really positive development being the eventual introduction of Financial Fair Play rules despite the football authorities' initial reluctance. The Committee issues an ultimatum to the game of English football: make the necessary reforms within 12 months or face possible legislation.

The Game Changer powerfully demonstrates how some organisations in business and sport have done more than raise their performance; they have also changed the rules of the game or the game itself within their industry. It gives examples of the strategies and governance programmes that have emerged to accomplish this, and the challenges of executing them. This book brings to life strategic management in business, sport and not-for-profit organisations. It explores many of the theories taught on MBA and other professional programmes through case studies from the worlds of sport and business, written by authors who have played a part in the change. Alistair Gray has spent much of his career in senior roles in these sectors and brings a unique insight to the field, as well as providing the reader with tools and techniques for improvement in governance and performance. The Game Changer is essential reading for both professionals looking for methods to improve their own performance and to embed strong principles of governance, and business students looking for real-life lessons from practice.
