This volume, thirty-second in the series, contains abstracts about the great disaster of the loss of the steamship Austria; the Paraguay expedition; the Court Martial of Captain Seth M. Barton; Indian hostilities; St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York; the defeat of Colonel Steptoe; yellow fever deaths; appointments by the President; marriage and death notices; criminal cases; all petitions to Congress relating to a person or persons; legal notices; chancery records; and much more. Where there is information about something or someone that might be of interest, an abstract was created. The newspaper reveals a personal side of the lives of many people. During the author's twenty-four years of research on her own family genealogy, she always wanted to read the National Intelligencer and bring to print the many stories found there. They can be found in this series. These abstracts are a great aid to finding locations, ages or relationships of ancestors in the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia areas, and elsewhere. Names of people in the news in these locales, as well as items or events which might provide a clue to an individual's location, age or relationship to others, are included. The author has organized the abstracts chronologically to make finding specific dates easier. All surnames, land tracts and vessels are included in the index.

The compiler states that "The National Intelligencer & Washington Advertiser is hereafter the Daily National Intelligencer." According to "Newspapers in Microform" (Washington D.C. : Library of Congress, 1984) the Daily National Intelligencer had nothing to do with "The National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser." The newspaper that succeeded the "National Intelligencer & Washington Advertiser" was the "National Intelligencer" distinct from the "Daily National Intelligencer," another newspaper. Of course, as newspapers go, the "National Intelligencer" may have adopted the word "Daily" for a while. To make matters more confusing, the District of Columbia had 2 papers named the "National Intelligencer" along with the "Daily" paper.
