The National Geotechnical Experimentation Sites (NGES) provide easy access to well-characterized and documented field test sites with a wide range of geological conditions. The 19 papers in this volume provide details on site characterization and experimentation performed at each site by the site ma

The Federal Highway Administration's Geotechnical Research Program strives to develop practical, cost-effective technology for bridge foundations, retaining walls, and embankments. A major focus of this program is the development of a designated system of national geotechnical experimentation sites (NGES) to improve our ability to find and evaluate new techniques for constructing safer and more economical highways and bridges. With this objective in mind, FHWA teamed up with the National Science Foundation to establish a system with a national management board and individual site managers. This article describes the system to accelerate geotechnical research to solve many serious, foundation-engineering problems and difficult, soil-support problems facing the highway community today.

This is the first book to revisit geotechnical site characterization from a probabilistic point of view and provide rational tools to probabilistically characterize geotechnical properties and underground stratigraphy using limited information obtained from a specific site. This book not only provides new probabilistic approaches for geotechnical site characterization and slope stability analysis, but also tackles the difficulties in practical implementation of these approaches. In addition, this book also develops efficient Monte Carlo simulation approaches for slope stability analysis and implements these approaches in a commonly available spreadsheet environment. These approaches and the software package are readily available to geotechnical practitioners and alleviate them from reliability computational algorithms. The readers will find useful information for a non-specialist to determine project-specific statistics of geotechnical properties and to perform probabilistic analysis of slope stability.

Communication of risks within a transparent and accountable framework is essential in view of increasing mobility and the complexity of the modern society and the field of geotechnical engineering does not form an exception. As a result, modern risk assessment and management are required in all aspects of geotechnical issues, such as planning, design, construction of geotechnical structures, mitigation of geo-hazards, management of large construction projects, maintenance of structures and life-cycle cost evaluation. This volume discusses: 1. Evaluation and control of uncertainties through investigation, design and construction of geotechnical structures; 2. Performance-based specifications, reliability based design and limit state design of geotechnical structures, and design code developments; 3. Risk assessment and management of geo-hazards, such as landslides, earthquakes, debris flow, etc.; 4. Risk management issues concerning large geotechnical construction projects; 5. Repair and maintenance strategies of geotechnical structures. Intended for researchers and practitioners in geotechnical, geological, infrastructure and construction engineering.
