This technology transfer meeting was held to disseminate info. on how to manage & treat contaminated sediments. 14 speakers presented various treatment options available for high- & low-end contaminated sites, & future research needs. Contaminated sediments is growing as an area of environmental concern, particularly when assessing ecological & public health risks. This report will be useful to individuals who are looking for information & techniques to treat contaminated sediments in rivers, harbors, lakes, &/or Superfund sites because of the associated ecological &/or public health risks or for navigational purposes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health.

The goal of the symposium was to promote discussion of the issues raised and recommendations presented in the National Research Council (NRC) report "Contaminated Marine Sediments in Ports and Waterways: Cleanup Strategies and Technologies," released in March 1997. Appendix D of the proceedings provides an Executive Summary of this NRC report. Although there are no simple solutions to the problems created by contaminated marine sediments, the problems can be managed effectively using a systematic, risk-based approach that incorporates incremental improvements in decision making, remediation technologies, and project implementation. Sponsors of the symposium were interested in educating and promoting dialogue among the diverse stakeholders involved in sediment management and in finding potential solutions. The material in the proceedings has been condensed and edited.

Contaminated marine sediments threaten ecosystems, marine resources, and human health. They can have major economic impacts when controversies over risks and costs of sediment management interfere with needs to dredge major ports. Contaminated Sediments in Ports and Waterways examines management and technology issues and provides guidance that will help officials make timely decisions and use technologies effectively. The book includes recommendations with a view toward improving decision making, developing cost-effective technologies, and promoting the successful completion of cleanup projects. The volume assesses the state of practice and research and development status of both short-term and longer-term remediation methods. The committee provides a conceptual overview for risk-based contaminated sediment management that can be used to develop plans that address complex technological, political, and legal issues and the interests of various stakeholders. The book emphasizes the need for proper assessment of conditions at sediment sites and adequate control of contamination sources.
