The origin Of these religions and the different stages through which they have passed, is another point, but so far as they have been studied, the systems all were closely con formed to the geographical situation. We are not able to trace any of these systems back to a very early period; certainly no such early period as existed in the lands Of the far East, but we do find an adapta tion to the surroundings, which are quite as striking as any that can be traced in other lands.
