Excerpt from Memoirs of My Own Times, Vol. 1 of 3 The intentions, the integrity, and independence of my pen will, I hope, defend its humble productions from the unmerited fate of its persecuted master. I am, however, sensible, that the anticipations excited by these Memoirs, may be unpropitious to their effect, interspersed even as they are with public dpcuments and official correspondence of interesting character; yet I do promise myself that the transactions, anecdotes, facts, and reflections, which I re cord, will not be deemed altogether unworthy the attention of the citizen, the soldier, the patriot, and the statesman. Excerpt from Recollections of My Own Times I began at my rural retreat in Brattleboro, Vermont, now eleven years ago (August 1, 1883), to indite these Recollections. Since that time anxious business and other cares have required all the attention my ability could exert. At last a season of comparative retirement from the actual strifes of business comes to me, offering cause to hope that it puts it in my power to complete what I then undertook. There are many projects and events of which I alone am now able adequately to relate. It will disclose motives, objects, and careers of abiding interest; and - as it has been said by those who chiefly have persuaded me to the task - will make more clear deeds upon which must rest the fame of men whose names are already esteemed of permanent historic value. They all are passed through this to the higher and eternal life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sketches of My Own Times The recollections of my boyhood all gather round a log cabin which stood in the early thirties on the south bank of a small stream. This branch ran west from our place for about two miles, to a point where it entered into Sugar Creek - whence the waters of both flowed together until they fell into the Wabash River on its eastern side, a short distance below the old town of Americus. The cabin had been completed but a few days when we moved into it, and was built upon a tract purchased by my father, at the public land-office in Crawfordsvilie some years before. Our new dwelling was made of rough logs, laid up in the bark, and covered with clapboards. These clapboards, well laid, make a better protection against rain and snow than the common shingles, which were used, at that time, very little in the country. Excerpt from History of My Own Times: Or, the Life and Adventures of William Otter, Sen;, Comprising a Series of Events, and Musical Incidents Altogether Original The purpose for which the author principally intends his book, you will find in the sequel of this preface; that many words will not be spent to inform all those into whose hands his production may fall, that it is not expressly for the use and instruction of children - who, being as it were, blank paper, taking all upon credit; if that were the authors intention, the first comer might write saint or devil upon it, which he pleased. To avoid such a verdict being pronounced, he does not intend either to labor very hard; that it was hastily got up, and ushered into the world before it was properly matured - as hasty publications are denounced by the public as a "crime." Excerpt from Historical Memoirs of My Own Time The Quarterly Review, after stating that I have egregiously mistaken the amount of my resources and of my ability, compares me, for incapacity and self-importance, to P. P. Clerk of this Parish, whose Memoirs furnish so much ludicrous entertainment in the works of Pope: while the British Critic characterizes the book as mere gossip, and languid iinbecility. It would not become me to appreciate the rank which my own understanding holds in the scale of intellect: but, either the public does not think so meanly of the Historical Memoirs, and their author, or they manifest a most incorrigible oh stinacy and inattention to the friendly admonitions reiterated by their literary guides, who exert every endeavour to prevent their readers from throwing away eighteen shillings on a new edi tion in octavo of the daily advertiser. Now I can assure these gentlemen, that the first edition of this imbecile work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from My Own Life and Times, 1741-1814 The work was written in the years 1 8 13 and 18 14, and appears to have been revised on more than one occasion afterwards. It was intended for publication; and it may be proper to state, that in allowing an interval of nearly half a century to elapse' before making it public, the representatives of the author have, as in now committing it to the press, acted in fulfilment of his own instructions. A few notes have been supplied by the Editor, chiefly for the purpose of identifying the persons whose names are in. Charged with having been In the regular receipt Of a sti pend from the court of Spain, and various sums have been specified to have been paid for me, on account of a pension fromthe year 1789 down to the year 1804 inclu sive, it is worthy of Observation, that neither in the whole course of that period, nor at any other time, amidst the frequent temptations Of a crisis, in which the interests Of Spain and the United States have been brought into col lision, has it been proved, or even attempted to be proved, that I have ever taken a single step, calculated to pro mote or gratify the views Of Spain; or that I have, di rectly or indirectly, rendered any service to the Spanish government, in return for the thousands and tens Of thou sands Of dollars, which it is represented they were SO prof fusely squandering for my benefit and aggrandisement.
