Since his call to the Bar in 1960, Martin L. Friedland has been involved in a number of important public policy issues, including bail, legal aid, gun control, securities regulation, access to the law, judicial independence and accountability, and national security. My Life in Crime and other Academic Adventures offers a first-hand account of the development of these areas of law from the perspective of a man who was heavily involved in their formation and implementation. It is also the story of a distinguished academic, author, and former dean of law at the University of Toronto. Moving beyond the boundaries of conventional memoir, Friedland offers an extended meditation on public policy issues and significant events in the field of law, discussing their historical impact and predicting the course of their future development. Given his personal experience, there is no other person more suited to discuss these hugely important issues. Friedland puts the law and legal institutions into a wider context, looking at the role of personalities, politics, and pressure groups in the establishment of laws that continue to have tremendous importance for Canadians. My Life in Crime and other Academic Adventures reflects upon a life devoted to education, scholarship, and the law, and is an insider account of public policy issues that have come to shape life in this country in the twentieth century and beyond.

The late 1690 and early 70s may be remembered as the years of the great bank and other armed robberies in Kenya. This is the true story of one of the participants in some of those robberies, John Kiriamiti. In raw and candid language, Kiriamiti tells the story of how he dropped out of secondary school when he was only fifteen years old, and for a time became a novice pickpocket, before graduating into crimes like car-breaking and ultimately into violent robbery. This spell-binding story takes the reader into the underworld of crime, and it depicts graphically the criminals struggle for survival against the forces of law. John Kiriamiti was imprisoned on 6 January 1971, after being convicted on a charge of committing robbery at Naivasha on 4 November 1970. Kiriamiti left Naivasha Maximum Security Prison in August 1984, just five months after the publication of this novel and those following which were a sensation with Kenyan youth in the late 1980s and '90s.

Rand's 1943 appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada invigorated what was then a pedestrian institution. His work in labour law, including his development of the Rand Formula, and his key judgments in civil liberties cases inspired a generation of Canadian judges, lawyers, and law students.

This volume marks the 2007 centenary of the Supreme Court of Alberta. These essays examine the extent to which the Court articulated an Albertan response to the varied legal questions of the past century. Canvassing the Court's jurisprudential history, the volume includes thematic essays examining First Nations' hunting rights, oil and gas law, water law, gender, the Hutterites and religious freedom, and family law. Additional essays detail the court's history through its early personnel, the World War I crisis over the court's independence, and the question of whether the court voiced an Albertan take on the constitution. What emerges is not the image of a maverick judiciary, but rather a court that pursued legal principles that would stand anywhere in the nation.
