The jolly and exciting tale of the little boy who lost his red coat and his blue trousers and his purple shoes but who was saved from the tigers to eat 169 pancakes for his supper, has been universally loved by generations of children. First written in 1899, the story has become a childhood classic and the authorized American edition with the original drawings by the author has sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Little Black Sambo is a book that speaks the common language of all nations, and has added more to the joy of little children than perhaps any other story. They love to hear it again and again; to read it to themselves; to act it out in their play.

Excerpt from Schatzkästlein Des Rheinischen Hausfreundes To our knowledge Hebel's Schatzkastlein has here tofore never been republished in the United States. This might be termed a sin of omission, because Johann Peter Hebel (born 1760, died 1826) counts among the dominant masters of German prose. Every reader in Germany loved and still loves Hebel for the humor and the sincere purpose of his writings, and every critic lauds and commends the classic simplicity and beauty of his style. He endeavored successfully to provide entertainment and enlightenment for the so-called middle class of his countrymen, and the grace with which he did so has not been surpassed or even attained by any other German author. He was the friend and the poet of the people and for the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Full of delightful fairy tales, charming poems, and engaging stories, the My Bookhouse series for children was published in the 1920s by Olive Beaupré Miller as a six-volume set. The books contained the best in children's literature and progressed through a natural, carefully graded order, from the simplest poems and stories to those that are more complex. Miller set high standards for the books: "First, -To be well equipped for life, to have ideas and the ability to express them, the child needs a broad background of familiarity with the best in literature. "Second, -Stories and rhymes must be selected with care that the child may absorb no distorted view of life and its actual values, but may grow up to be mentally clear about values and emotionally impelled to seek what is truly desirable and worthwhile in human living. "Third, -The stories and rhymes selected must be graded to the child's understanding at different periods of growth, graded as to vocabulary, as to subject matter and as to complexity of structure and plot." The series would eventually include twelve volumes. The original volumes included: Volume 1, In the Nursery (1920) Volume 2, Up One Pair of Stairs (1920) Volume 3, Through Fairy Halls (1920) Volume 4, The Treasure Chest (1920) Volume 5, From The Tower Window (1921) Volume 6, The Latch Key (1921) The series is an ideal teaching aid for parents who want to help their children read well, think clearly, and absorb the most important lessons that literature has to teach. This volume, a facsimile of the original 1920 edition of The Treasure Chest, features classic stories of wonder and adventure. It also features the color illustrations included in the original edition of the book. It is printed on acid-free, archival-quality paper for durability and long use.
