Excerpt from My Bohemian Days in London In falling in with the suggestion made to me by my publisher that I should write a further volume on my Bohemian days I found myself confronted with the perplexing question as to when one's "Bohemian days" can really be said to have ended, for I have always been inclined to think that "once a Bohemian, always a Bohemian." Of course, I do not refer to the state of affairs which is a dreadful reality to many a struggling artist, and from which through force of circumstances, there is no getting away - to such the word is but a synonym for penury, and there can be little romance in connection with it, in London at any rate. There is another form of Bohemianism not associated with actual poverty that appeals so strongly to some men, that long after youth is passed, and when they are in a position to live as ordinary citizens, they still remain under its spell. It might be termed the fascination of the unconventional, were it not that unconventionality is almost inherent, and is largely a matter of temperament and climatic influence. My souvenirs, as will be seen, relate more specially to this phase of Bohemian life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from My Life: Sixty Years' Recollections of Bohemian London I began these reminiscences, written at the suggestion of my friend the editor of the Evening News, in the first hour of the year 1916. The front door was flung wide at five minutes to midnight on December 31, 1915, and as the last Of the twelve momentous Shocks of sound died away a dark man in the Shape Of a friendly policeman did me the kindly service of being the first to cross my threshold. And now that the New Year has come to us amid an almost oppressive stillness, with no gay clang of church bells, and only a far distant and apparently restrained welcome by the steam-whistles and the hooters of the great works where labour toils through the night, I sit down in my grandfather's big cane-seated arm-chair and peer into the dim and distant past. In the hour that my land is athrill and athrob with the alarums and excursions of the greatest war the world has ever known, my memory carries me back to the day just upon Sixty years since when all London was abroad far into the night celebrating the blessed peace that had come to us after the agonies of the Crimea. I gaze from my window into the blacked-out expanse of the park, and I see once again the skies of that memorable May night ablaze. From Hyde Park, from Victoria Park, from St. James's Park, and from Primrose Hill a thousand devices in golden flame have been hurled into the air. But no fireworks of joy flame in the night skies above me in the year that we have just entered upon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old Days in Bohemian London (Recollections of Clement Scott) I don't want to speak of him as if he were a theatrical Pope, and consequently infallible - but his notices of new productions were so definite, SO convincing, so boldly stated, so fearless and incisive, so analytical and accurately estimated, that they read as if he had put himself in the position of plaintiff, counsel for the defence and judge, too. NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Bohemian Days In Fleet Street This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Excerpt from Days and Ways of an Old Bohemian As I have never kept a diary, except for business and Official purposes, I do not pretend to be precise in my dates. Nor have I adhered strictly to any chronological arrangement. I have just written down things as they have occurred to me, often more with regard to subject than to date. My birth coincided with the more important episode of the Crimean War, also, it happens, with inter alia, the first use Of photography in portraiture, the abolition of the Revenue Stamp on newspapers, and the first issue Of a London daily newspaper, the Daily Telegraph, at the price Of one penny. Excerpt from Bohemia in London When authors are honest to themselves, they admit that their books are failures, in that they are never quite what they wished to make them. A book has a wilful way of its own, as soon as it is fairly started, and somehow has a knack of cheating its writer out of itself and changing into something different. It is usually a reversal of the story of "Beauty and the Beast." The odious beast does not become a prince; but a wonderful, clear, brilliant-coloured dream (as all books are before they are written) turns in the very hands of its author into a monster that he does not recognise. I wanted to write a book that would make real on paper the strange, tense, joyful and despairing, hopeful and sordid life that is lived in London by young artists and writers. I wanted to present life in London as it touches the people who come here, like Whittingtons, to seek the gold of fame on London pavements.
