The southeast corner of Oregon is dry, flat, and, in certain areas, spectacularly beautiful. It probably has as many cows, sheep, and horses as people. The southeast corner of Oregon is not the usual place where a former investigative reporter turned college professor hangs out. When Margot Tateman, an old high school friend, calls Thomas Martindale for help in finding her missing husband, however, it is to this remote part of the state that he goes. In and around the tiny town of Frenchglen and Steens Mountain, Tom tries to find Michael Tateman. During his search, he encounters men who try to stop him. All trails lead to the remote Kiger Gorge, home to a herd of wild mustangs, descended from horses brought to the West by Spanish conquistadores in the 17th century. Tom wants to find the missing man, the men want the horses, and will do anything to get them... including murder.

Skeet's Cherokee grandmother has come to live with her and her teenage ward Brian, and Skeet is still trying to adjust to the change while also keeping the peace on the local college campus. Then Ash Mowbray, a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks, comes back to Brewster as a wealthy developer, pushing plans to build a shopping mall on the outskirts of town that will destroy the town square businesses. The town council is split on his proposal, and emotions are running high. Mowbray makes things worse by announcing that he is the real father of the high school athlete Noah Steen, having left Noah's mother, Chelsea, pregnant as a teenager when he fled town after high school. Chelsea and her husband Norman are horrified that Mowbray has publicized that Norman is not Noah's father and afraid that he will steal their beloved son from them. Noah is shocked to learn the truth of his parentage and furious with Mowbray. It's not long before Mowbray turns up murdered with Noah as the prime suspect. Brian and Noah's girlfriend Angie turn to Skeet to find the murderer and save their friend. Linda Rodriguez's Every Hidden Fear is a thrilling and emotionally-resonant mystery, told by a masterful writer in full command of her craft.

Much as men rushed to the California gold fields, a small group of proud and visionary cattlemen heard of the boundless open and free range land of Central and Southeastern Oregon in the mid-1800s and brought their herds there. Sometimes called “Cattle Kings,” or “Cattle Barons,” they ruled with painstaking vigor, occasional cruelty, and tenacity the untitled land. Thousands of their cattle and horses grazed on the boundless prairies. Four men who built cattle empires were John Devine, Peter French, Bill Hanley, and Henry Miller. One of these four barons eventually owned it all. Smaller ranchers were tolerated but bun-carrying vaqueros discouraged intruders, particularly sheep men and homesteaders. Their empires lasted until the mid-1900s, but during their time they made the era legendary in the history of the region.
