"The year is 1919. An expedition led by famed archeologist, Professor Henry Fell, approaches an ancient Egyptian tomb deep inside solid rock--sealed from the outside world though long centuries. The international exploration team, which includes the popular British author, G.K. Chesterton, enters the burial chamber. Who would do such a thing? The sarcophagus is opened--but what they discover inside is not a three-thousand-year-old mummy but a freshly murdered corpse. Was it Sir Edward Narracourt, Fell's archrival who would like nothing better than to discredit the professor's work? Or Mamur Zapt, an escaped convict and revolutionary leader who is a member of the team only because of his knowledge of the geography? What about Elliot Jones, a journalist desperate to make name for himself? Or Colonel Race, the eccentric and secretive member of the party who formerly served in British Military Intelligence?"

Join our plucky Victorian Egyptologist , together with her devastatingly handsome and brilliant husband Radcliffe, in another exciting escapade The irascible husband of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is living up to his reputation as 'The Father of Curses'. Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, Emerson is awarded instead the 'pyramids' of Mazghunah - countless mounds of rubble in the middle of nowhere. Nothing in this barren spot seems of any interest but then a murder in Cairo changes all of that. The dead man was an antiques dealer, killed in his shop, so when a sinister-looking Egyptian spotted at the crime scene turns up in Mazghunah, Amelia can't resist following his trail. At the same time she has to keep an eagle eye on her wayward son Rameses and his elegant and calculating cat and look into the mysterious disappearance of a mummy case...

Amidst Commemoration Night festivities at Beaufort College, Oxford, chaos erupts twice -- the first time during the playing of a prank using Professor Benchley's newly acquired mummy, the late King Pepy I, and the second time when a fire consumes the Bursary, coincidentally the building where Benchley resides. This combination of events results in a mystery: the disappearance of either Benchley or the mummy. Despite the coroner's ruling of accidental death for the professor, only one corpse is recovered among the ashes at the scene. Professors Sargent and Considine cannot let the matter rest with this verdict and go sleuthing, using all the scholarly know-how of their academic specialties and they find themselves entangled in a web of very unusual circumstances.

Radcliffe Emerson, the irascible husband of fellow archaeologist and Egyptologist Amelia Peabody, has earned the nickname "Father of Curses" -- and at Mazghunah he demonstrates why. Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, he and Amelia are resigned to excavating mounds of rubble in the middle of nowhere. And there is nothing in this barren area worthy of their interest -- until an antiquities dealer is murdered in his own shop. A second sighting of a sinister stranger from the crime scene, a mysterious scrap of papyrus, and a missing mummy case have all whetted Amelia's curiosity. But when the Emersons start digging for answers in an ancient tomb, events take a darker and deadlier turn -- and there may be no surviving the very modern terrors their efforts reveal.

Consuming Ancient Egypt examines the influence of Ancient Egypt on the everyday lives of contemporary people, of all ages, throughout the world. It looks at the Egypt tourist sees, Egypt in film and Egypt as the inspiration for opera. It asks why so many books are published each year on Egyptological subjects at all levels, from the austerely academic to the riotous celebrations of Egypt as a land of mystery, enchantment and fantasy. It then considers the ways in which Ancient Egypt interacts with the living world, in architecture, museum going, the acquisition of souvenirs and reproductions, design, and the perpetual appeal of the mummy. The significance of Egypt as an adjunct to (and frequently the subject of) marketing in the consumer society is examined. It reveals much about Egypt's immemorial appeal and the psychology of those who succumb to its magic.
