Impedance matching is a canonical problem in electrical engineering. The problem is to maximize power flowing from a generator to a load with an adroit design of a matching network. Typically, matching problems use a single-port load. In contrast, this report develops matching for a load with multiple ports. The specific multiport load is a three-wire antenna. Each wire has a feed port so that the load is a 3-port. The matching problem is to find a matching network that maximizes power flow from a single feed to all three ports across a wide frequency band (100-700 MHz). Unexpectedly, several theoretical matching multiports were found that gave excellent wideband performance. Consequently, this serendipitous result opens several directions of opportunity. One direction aims at the enhancing the antenna's wideband performance. Understanding the physical phenomenon of coupling between the wires, the physical geometry of the wires, and a Pareto theory for maximal bandwidth and minimal size are all significant research topics. Another direction aims at the matching networks because of the gaps in theory and practical design. Specific and detailed formulation of these research opportunities is made explicit in this report.

The objective of the research is to solve several problems of fundamental importance in the design of broadband matching networks and multiplexers. More specifically, we investigate the following: (1) Obtain a set of coefficient constraints that are necessary and sufficient for a real rational matrix to be the scattering matrix of a passive n-port network normalizing to the n prescribed non-foster positive-real impedances. (2) Derive a set of coefficient constraints that are necessary and sufficient for the existence of a lossless reciprocal n-port network, which, when terminated in the n given frequency-dependent loads, realizes the prescribed transducer power-gain characteristics among its ports. Study the relationships between the broadband matching of many ports and the design theory of multiplexers and apply the known results in the theory of broadband matching to minimize the interaction effects of the individual channels.

Theory and Design of Broadband Matching Networks centers on the network theory and its applications to the design of broadband matching networks and amplifiers. Organized into five chapters, this book begins with a description of the foundation of network theory. Chapter 2 gives a fairly complete exposition of the scattering matrix associated with an n-port network. Chapter 3 considers the approximation problem along with a discussion of the approximating functions. Chapter 4 explains the Youla's theory of broadband matching by illustrating every phase of the theory with fully worked out examples. The extension of Youla's theory to active load impedance is taken up in Chapter 5. This book will be useful as a reference for practicing engineers who wish to learn how the modern network theory can be applied to the design of many practical circuits.

Multiport array-antennas are widely used in beamforming, multiple input multiple output (MIMO), and diversity systems. In applications where a space less than half- wavelength is available, strong mutual coupling between antenna ports is introduced and causes system performance degradation. In addition, limited size of ground plane (chassis modes) will modify the radiation characteristics of the antenna array. Design of decoupling matching networks becomes of essential to compensate for the effect of mutual coupling. In this book, different approaches of decoupling networks will be presented. In the Eigenmode based decoupling approach, the mutual coupling is compensated through a physical path connected between array elements, while in the parasitic decoupling approach, antenna ports are decoupled through a coupling path between array elements. Both approaches are demonstrated for the monopole four square array antenna where four monopole elements are placed at the corners of an electrically small platform (chassis) to scan the beam in azimuth.

An interactive BASIC language computer program to aid in the design of a matching network for a broadband antenna is described. Guidelines for the design of a broadband matching network are presented. The Antenna Matching (ANTMAT) program provides a computer-aided design tool for determining network topology and component values of the networks. It improves the speed and accuracy of the broadband matching network design procedures. An optimization algorithm finds that the values of the components that minimize the input reflection coefficient. At first, the optimization algorithm with an exponential weighting function is employed for determining a list of network candidates (either a pi network for a T network) from which a network topology is selected. After a topology is specified, the optimization algorithm with other weighting function is used for finding optimum element values. Keywords include: Interactive computer program, Computer-aided design, Network topology, and Optimization algorithm.
