In the last few decades civil engineering has undergone substantial technological change which has, naturally, been reflected in the terminology employed in the industry. Efforts are now being made in many countries to bring about a systematization and unification of technical terminology in general, and that of civil engineering in particular. The publication of a multilingual dictionary of civil engineering terms has been necessitated by the expansion of international cooperation and information exchange in this field, as well as by the lack of suitable updated bilingual dictionaries. This Dictionary contains some 14.000 English terms together with their German, French, Dutch and Russian equivalents, which are used in the main branches of civil engineering and relate to the basic principles of structural design and calculations (the elasticity theory, strength of materials, soil mechanics and other allied technical disciplines); to buildings and installations, structures and their parts, building materials and prefabrications, civil engineering technology and practice, building and road construction machines, construction site equipment, housing equipment and fittings (including modern systems of air conditioning); as well as to hydrotechnical and irrigation constructions. The Dictionary also includes a limited number of basic technical expressions and terms relating to allied disciplines such as architecture and town planning, as well as airfield, railway and underground construction. The Dictionary does not list trade names of building materials, parts and machines or the names of chemical compounds. Nor does it give adverbial, adjective or verbal terms.

The chief aim of this dictionary is to provide the user with a thorough coverage of the everyday terms used in the field of architecture and construction. The whole field, including associated fields, is covered in about 30,000 entries; this simplifies use of the dictionary and avoids too many references. The dictionary contains almost all the radical words and principal parts together with the most important compound words and terms encountered in professional texts, specifications, contracts, projects, drawings and scientific papers, as well as words heard every day on the site. The compound words listed are mainly those where the separate translations of each part of the word would not produce precisely the same meaning in the other language. If a compound is not listed, the reader can safely translate it by breaking it up into its component parts and looking these up individually. An appendix contains important abbreviations and contractions used mainly on drawings. The dictionary has followed international practices in construction and has been constantly brought up to date using a variety of contemporary sources. On publication, the dictionary will represent the result of ten years of work by the author. The following specialities are covered; architecture, structural engineering, underground and foundation engineering, soil mechanics, roads and bridges engineering, hydraulic engineering and structures, timber engineering, carpentry and joinery, sanitary engineering and plumbing, heating and air conditioning, acoustical engineering and illumination engineering, environmental engineering, coating work, preservation of structures and waterproofing, surveying, special mathematical terms, strength theory and statics, building material and testing, construction equipment and tools, and construction contracts and economics.

John Henry Parker's remarkably timeless dictionary of architecture, first published in 1846, became such a success that he continued to revise it for several years. A profusely illustrated manual that is valuable as a reference or as a portable guide on visits to historical buildings, this authoritative glossary of nearly 500 words used in Greek, Roman, Italian, and Gothic architecture remains highly instructive and informative. Accurate engravings complement many of the author's incisive descriptions — from a buttress in Glastonbury Abbey to zig-zag mouldings in a Norman doorway. Extended entries cover arches, windows, tombs, and other architectural elements; while shorter notes define less commonly used terms such as cavetto, dado, and embrasure. An indispensable reference for architects and students of architecture, the text includes a topographical index to the illustrations, identifying the many British cathedrals, castles, and parish churches used as examples.
