This Engineer Manual (EM) is intended to provide detailed guidance on all phases of remediation projects involving Multi-phase Extraction (MPE). This includes guidance on (1) the appropriate site characterization and pilot studies for MPE; (2) appropriate considerations in screening MPE for a site; (3) design of subsurface and aboveground components (excluding off gas and water treatment systems); and (4) start-up, operations and maintenance and site closure.

EPA has estimated that more than 200,000 sites remain to be remediated in the United States, including Superfund, RCRA Corrective Action, Underground Storage Tank, Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DOE), civilian federal agency, and state sites. About 70 percent of Superfund, RCRA, DoD, and DOE sites have contaminated soil or groundwater, or both (EPA, 1997a). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including chlorinated solvents, are a frequently-occurring type of contaminant at these sites. This report provides an overview of the state-of-the-practice for multi-phase extraction (MPE). MPE involves simultaneous extraction of soil vapor and groundwater to remediate both types of contaminated media. MPE has seen an increase in use at Superfund and other sites for cleanup of soil and groundwater impacted with halogenated VOCs, and also has been used frequently for cleanup of petroleum-hydrocarbon sites. This report focuses primarily on the applicability and use of MPE at sites with halogenated VOCs. Section 2 of this report provides a description of MPE technology, including the various configurations used for this technology. Section 3 describes the types of site conditions to which MPE would be applicable, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using MPE at these types of sites. Section 4 summarizes information about attributes of MPE vendors and examples of sites where these vendors have applied their technologies. Information about these vendors was obtained from EPA REACH IT, an extensive database of information about characterization and treatment technologies.

The relatively new technique of solid phase microextraction (SPME) is an important tool to prepare samples both in the lab and on-site. SPME is a "green" technology because it eliminates organic solvents from analytical laboratory and can be used in environmental, food and fragrance, and forensic and drug analysis. This handbook offers a thorough background of the theory and practical implementation of SPME. SPME protocols are presented outlining each stage of the method and providing useful tips and potential pitfalls. In addition, devices and fiber coatings, automated SPME systems, SPME method development, and In Vivo applications are discussed. This handbook is essential for its discussion of the latest SPME developments as well as its in depth information on the history, theory, and practical application of the method. Practical application of Solid Phase Microextraction methods including detailed steps Provides history of extraction methods to better understand the process Suitable for all levels, from beginning student to experienced practitioner

Mixed or multiphase flows of solid/liquid or solid/gas are commonly found in many industrial fields, and their behavior is complex and difficult to predict in many cases. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a powerful tool for the understanding of fluid mechanics in multiphase reactors, which are widely used in the chemical, petroleum, mining, food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. Computational Techniques for Multiphase Flows enables scientists and engineers to the undertand the basis and application of CFD in muliphase flow, explains how to use the technique, when to use it and how to interpret the results and apply them to improving aplications in process enginering and other multiphase application areas including the pumping, automotive and energy sectors. Understandable guide to a complex subject Important in many industries Ideal for potential users of CFD
