This memoir is the harrowing story of one mother's journey through the hell of her daughter's heroin addiction. Subsequently, the author emerged into the youth culture of the 60’s, where rampant drug experimentation was the norm. Out of this chaos, the author then examines her personal history from that personal and social historic moment, leading to her subsequent marriage to an alcoholic, and then to the three children who were the offspring of that marriage. From the time her oldest daughter was a teenager her daughter exhibited addictive personality traits, culminating in a serious heroin addiction and consequent enmeshment in the criminal justice system. On the night of August 18, 2009, at 32 years of age, her daughter lost the battle to her addiction and died of a drug overdose. The suffering this addiction inflicted on her daughter, the family, and society at large is examined in an unflinching portrayal of the nefarious forces at work. Addiction is indeed a thief that steals a promising future from anyone who suffers from these compulsive behaviors, and it steals in an indiscriminate manner from all echelons of society. This moving story makes a brave attempt to understand solutions and treatments for drug addiction. Although the subject matter is gritty, the story is neither gloomy nor depressing, and may offer hope to families of addicts worldwide

These efforts included changes in sentencing that eliminated parole and imposed draconian sentences for violent and drug crimes. The federal government, followed by most states, implemented sentencing guidelines that greatly reduced the discretion of the courts to impose sentences. The results were a multifold increase in the numbers of individuals in jails and prisons and on community supervision—increases that have only recently crested. There were also efforts to engage prosecutors and the courts in diversion and oversight, including the development of prosecutorial diversion programs, as well as a variety of specialty courts. Penal reform has included efforts to understand the transitions from prison to the community, including federal-led efforts focused on reentry programming. Community corrections reforms have ranged from increased surveillance through drug testing, electronic monitoring, and in some cases, judicial oversight, to rehabilitative efforts driven by risk and needs assessment. More recently, the focus has included pretrial reform to reduce the number of people held in jail pending trial, efforts that have brought attention to the use of bail and its disproportionate impact on people of color and the poor. This collection of chapters from leading researchers addresses a wide array of the latest research in the field. I tell about moving counterfeit money, drug smuggling and drug-dealing, writing my own medical prescriptions, and how I defrauded the public in service stations selling tires, shocks, and other automotive accessories. And of course I explain my journey through the prison system. Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services.
