Excerpt from A Textbook on Electric Street-Car Running: Motor Principles Car Equipment The Bound Volumes sent to students of the Electric Street-Car Running Course are two in number. The first volume contains twelve papers, the first two of which take up the principles involved in the operation of dynamos and motors; the remainder describe the various appliances used for the operation and equipment of electric street cars. The second volume is practically a contintuation of the first, and contains seven sections, giving general instructions relating to car operation and detailed instructions covering the subject of brakes. This course has been prepared to provide thorough and systematic instruction relating to the equipment and operation of electric street cars. Heretofore, very little on this subject has been published in connected form and put in such shape as to be easily understood by those who have not had previous technical training. The course, as here presented, is the result of years of practical experience in the actual operation of electric railways. It describes plainly how to locate and remedy faults of various kinds, and illustrations have been freely used to make the text as clear as possible. If the student masters thoroughly the instruction here given, he should be able to understand and operate any other equipment he may be placed in charge of. The text is arranged so as to be easily understood, mathematics is entirely eliminated, and the course should prove of great assistance to all those in need of straightforward practical instruction on the equipment and operation of electric street cars. There are 108 valuable illustrations in Roger B. Whitman's revised edition of Motor Car Principles. The book clearly sets forth the base of principles of the motor car, and should be an almost invaluable guide for the owner or mechanician. A chapter on causes of trouble is an especially good part of the book and the final feature is a handy testing chart, "What to do When the Motor Stops." -American Motorist, Vol. 5 [1913]Mr. Whitman, the author, has also written a work on Motor Car Principles. The present work is written along similar lines but deals with the motor cycle, cycle-car and light car. It is an elementary treatise, well written and illustrated with numerous clear sketches. The book is to be recommended to those who are just taking up the use of the motor cycle or light car and want to familiarize themselves with the working principles of these machines. Some hints in regard to troubles and their remedies are also given. -The Horseless Age, Vol. 34 [1914]

Excerpt from Motor-Cycle Principles and the Light Car: With Explanations of the Construction of Those Parts of Motor Cycles, Cycle Cars and the Ford Car That Differ From Automobile Practice, and Chapters on Care and Maintenance, and on the Location and Remedy of Trouble The chapters on the care of the machine and on the causes of trouble should make it possible for the novice to handle his mount or car with em ciency and some degree of skill. As the sole aim has been an explanation of principles, no attempt has been made to go into the details of construction of the difierent machines. It is believed that when a principle is understood, its application as embodied in a specific mechanism will be readily comprehended.
