This is the annotated edition including both volumes of the original book, a rare biographical essay on the author, as well as an essay by Edgar Allan Poe on Hawthorne's tale-writing. In 1846 the "Mosses from an Old Manse" was published in New York in two volumes, which contain, on the whole, his best work in short stories, and are prefaced by one of his most delightful essays, "The Old Manse." In some of them, it may be, the allegory is too apparent, but in general they are very deep and searching studies of the heart and conscience. Among the best are " Young Goodman Brown," " Roger Malvin's Burial," " Rappaccini's' Daughter," which is usually placed highest, and " Drowne's Wooden Image." " The Birthmark " and " The Artist of the Beautiful" also rank high in the estimation of critics. "The Celestial Railroad " is a clever satire on modern religion; "The Intelligence Ofiice," "The Procession of Life," and "Earth's Holocaust" are conceits with a burden of symbolic meaning. "The Old Apple-Dealer " is a study of a character with the least possible amount of coloring. " P.'s Correspondence" is mainly interesting, perhaps, for the curious speculation, under the guise of a lunatic's vagaries, on what age might have made of those early poets of the century who died young or in middle life, - especially of what its sobering and conservative tendencies would have done for Byron, Burns, Shelley, and Keats. " The Hall of Fantasy," " A Select Party," and " A Virtuoso's Collection" are ingeniously executed fancies. "Mrs. Bullfrog" is a light, humorous sketch, and " Fire Worship" and " Buds and Bird Voices" are delightful essays.

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the timeThe collection includes several previously published stories, and was named in honor of The Old Manse, where Hawthorne and his wife lived during the first three years of their marriage. The first edition was published in 1846. Many of the stories compiled in Old Manse's Mosses are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature. Hawthorne's friend, Herman Melville, noted this aspect in his review "Hawthorne and his mosses": This black conceit permeates it from beginning to end. He may be impressed by his sunlight, carried by the bright gold in the skies he builds on you.William Henry Channing noted in his review of the collection, in The Harbinger, its author "had been baptized in the deep waters of the tragedy", and his work was dark with only brief moments of "serene brightness" that was never brighter than "dark twilight".After the book's first publication, Hawthorne sent copies to critics like Margaret Fuller, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Theodore Tuckerman. Poe responded with a long review in which he praised Hawthorne's writings but blamed him for associating with the New England magazines, Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalists. He wrote: "Let him repair his pen, take a bottle of visible ink, get out of the Old Manse, cut Mr. Alcott, hang up (if possible) the editor of 'The Dial' and throw it out the window to all odd numbers from the American magazine A young Walt Whitman wrote that Hawthorne was underpaid and that it was unfair that his book competed with imported European books. He asked: "Should the true American genius tremble negligently while the public runs after this foreign garbage? "In general, most contemporary critics praised the collection and considered it better than Hawthorne's previous collection, Twice-Told Tales.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a celebrated nineteenth century American literary figure who penned numerous critically acclaimed novels and short stories. Hawthorne's writings were mostly Puritanical moral allegories set in New England. Element of Dark Romanticism, theme of inherent evil, moral dilemma and psychological complexity of human mind are explored in his works consistently. His notable works include Twice-Told Tales, The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, Hawthorne was a descendant of a long line of Puritan ancestors. He was related to an unrepentant presiding magistrate involved in Salem witch trials, John Hathorne. So as not to identify himself with the scandalous Hathorne family, Hawthorne added a 'w' in his name in his youth. His father was a ship captain who died of yellow fever at sea when he was four years old. The sudden demise of his father made his mother very protective of him which engendered an isolated atmosphere for him. This period in his childhood rendered him shy and an avid reader which shaped his personality in such a way that led him to choose a career in writing.
