Excerpt from More Culloden Papers, Vol. 5: February 1746 to December 1747 I have had no correspondence, and it is quite new to me the fact that Lord Hardwicke had any of the President's letters, tho' many must exist that were not at Culloden in copy; as except on particular public business I do not think the President kept copies of his letters. It is somewhat strange that Messrs Cadell and Davies find the papers now of value. It was their constant theme that they were not, and in fact they spoiled the publica tion by curtailing at first and then making an addenda - they altered my preface in that part to excuse this; tho' they had all the papers in due time and made the first print from an idea. Excerpt from More Culloden Papers, Vol. 4: February 1744 to February 1746 Although it was originally intended that the collections dealing with the Forty-five should be issued in one volume, it was found impossible to accomplish this without serious abridgement. In connection with events, the results of which so completely changed the Highlands, it was con sidered better to give too much than too little, especially as reputations have sometimes suffered needlessly from an extract, where a whole letter might have furnished palliation or excuse. The military aspects of the Jacobite campaigns in eighteenth-century Britain are considered in this study. Taken from the viewpoint of those loyal to the Hanoverian Crown, the three mainland campaigns of 1715–6, 1719 and 1745–6 are examined, using research based on primary sources: memoirs, diaries, letters, newspapers and State papers.
