"It's Moosewood's world. We're just eating in it." —Christine Muhlke, The New York Times The creators of America’s beloved natural foods restaurant, Moosewood, are back with The Moosewood Restaurant Table, their new book with over 250 brand new, never-before-published recipes. With the restaurant now in its fifth decade, the Moosewood chefs continue to remain faithful to the farm-to-table philosophy that has governed the restaurant since its founding, while also keeping an eye on today's gastro-trends. As they say “We’ve gotten to know our customers and readers pretty well... their curiosity and culinary IQ have grown exponentially...We’ve been on some adventures developing this book...” Indeed, they have, working with some less common fruits and vegetables that you might find in your CSA, like Romanesco broccoli and watermelon radishes. They’ve begun cooking with a wider variety of grains like freekeh and millet. All this experimentation has led them to some great new recipes: Two Potato Tomato Curry Cashew-Crusted Chickpea Burgers Cuban Picadillo with Tofu Pot Pies for Autumn Winter and Spring Butternut Latkes Jamaican Jerk Tempeh Patties and plenty more. Of course, a Moosewood cookbook wouldn’t be complete without desserts like Turkish Coffee Brownies, Orange Pistachio Cornmeal Cake or Cherry Tomato Upside Down Cake to mention just a few. Including a healthy number of both vegan and gluten-free recipes, The Moosewood Restaurant Table is the next classic from the restaurant that revolutionized natural eating in the US.

This book explores themes in the rhetoric of vegetarian discourse. A vegan practice may help mitigate crises such as climate change, global health challenges, and sharpening socioeconomic disparities, by ensuring both fairness in the treatment of animals and food justice for marginalized populations. How the message is spread is crucial for these aims. Vegan practices thus uncover tensions between individual dietary choices and social justice activism, between ego and eco, between human and animal, between capitalism and environmentalism, and within the larger universe of theoretical and practical ethics. The chapters apply rhetorical methodologies to understand vegan/vegetarian discourse, emphasizing, for example, vegan/vegetarian rhetoric through the lens of polyphony, the role of intersectional rhetoric in becoming vegan, as well as ecofeminist, semiotic, and discourse theory approaches to veganism. The book aims to show that a rhetorical understanding of vegetarian and vegan discourse is crucial for the goals of movements promoting veganism. The book is intended for a wide interdisciplinary audience of scholars, researchers, and individuals interested in veganism, food and media studies, rhetorical studies, human-animal studies, cultural studies and related disciplines. It urges readers to examine vegan discourses seriously, not just as a matter of personal choice or taste but as one vital for intersectional justice and our planetary survival.

The family dinner is the one moment during the day when we sit down together to enjoy a good meal, engage in lively conversation, and, too often, experience mass hysteria. The family table is also a place where we gather in times of celebration and sadness, to embrace food and each other. "The table is a place of communion for life's large and small events," writes master chef Art Smith. And all of us have experienced the enlightenment of the holiday meal. "You think you have a handle on God, the Universe, and the Great White Light until you go home for Thanksgiving," says Shirley MacLaine. "In an hour, you realize how far you've got to go and who is the real turkey." In The Family Dinner, authors Linda Sunshine and Mary Tiegreen celebrate this phenomenon of family life with photographs and written excerpts from a wide spectrum of families--rich and poor, immigrant and suburban, gourmet and kitchen-challenged. With love, grace, and a big dollop of humor, the authors remind us that family dinners, however defined or indigestible, exemplify who we are and where we came from. "Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one," says Jane Howard. So here is the perfect gift book for anyone who cooks for you or eats with you, and for all of us who gather together around a table.
