The Monterey Fire Department was experiencing a rapid increase in occupational injury and illnesses. Back injuries led the categories of injury by a wide margin. This project sought to examine the problem of back injuries in the department in hopes of identifying ways to reduce or eliminate their occurrence. Examination of existing programs, injury reports and the results of a questionnaire completed by the members of the department was used to determine areas for improvement. Several programs were identified that could be altered to reduce the chance for back injury in the future. Better medical screening of prospective fire fighters was recommended, as well as a mandatory physical fitness program which included exercises designed to improve the strength of the muscles supporting the spine. Other recommendations included "back school" training on an annual basis and the provision of beds and chairs designed to provide proper back support.
