Momentum Transfer in Fluids provides information pertinent to fluid mechanics. This book discusses several topics related to the movement of fluids, including boundary-layer analysis, statistical treatment of turbulence, as well as laminar and turbulent shear-flow. Comprised of seven chapters, this book starts with an overview of the physical nature of momentum and describes the application of this concept to systems of variable weight, which are useful in the prediction of the physical behavior of fluids in motion. This text then explores the fundamental properties and the macroscopic aspects of turbulent flow. Other chapters present the significance and utility of mixing length and other macroscopic turbulence parameters. This book discusses as well the prediction of the velocity and friction as functions of position in the flowing stream. The final chapter deals with the qualitative aspects of boundary flows for compressible and incompressible fluids. This book is a valuable resource for scientists and chemical engineers.

Transport Phenomena is an umbrella term to describe the fundamental processes of momentum, energy, and mass transfer. This unique compendium covers momentum transfer at the microscopic and macroscopic levels in the three stages of problem-solving, namely formulation, simplification, and mathematical solution. The book does not overwhelm students with a large repertoire of problems. Instead, it highlights clear and easy presentation to help students grasp the methodology in problem-solving.This useful reference text benefits upper undergraduate and graduate level students in the fields of chemical, mechanical, civil, and environmental engineering.Related Link(s)

"Momentum transfer in a fluid involves the study of the motion of fluids and the forces that produce these motions. From Newton's second law of motion it is known that force is directly related to the time rate of change of momentum of a system. Excluding action-at-a-distance forces, such as gravity, the forces acting on a fuid, such as those resulting from pressure and shear stress, may be shown to be the result of microscopic (molecular) transfer of momentum. Thus, the subject under consideration, which is historically fluid mechanics, may equally be termed momentum transfer. The history of fluid mechanics shows the skillful blending of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century analytical work in hydrodynamics with the empirical knowledge in hydraulics that man has collected over the ages. The mating of these separately developed disciplines was started by Ludwig Prandtl in 1904 with his boundary-layer theory, which was verifed by experiment. Modern fluid mechanics, or momentum transfer, is both analytical and experimental"--

First published in 1975 as the third edition of a 1957 original, this book presents the fundamental ideas of fluid flow, viscosity, heat conduction, diffusion, the energy and momentum principles, and the method of dimensional analysis. These ideas are subsequently developed in terms of their important practical applications, such as flow in pipes and channels, pumps, compressors and heat exchangers. Later chapters deal with the equation of fluid motion, turbulence and the general equations of forced convection. The final section discusses special problems in process engineering, including compressible flow in pipes, solid particles in fluid flow, flow through packed beds, condensation and evaporation. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest the wider applications of fluid mechanics and heat transfer.

Fundamentals of Momentum, Heat, and Mass Transfer provides a unified treatment of momentum transfer (fluid mechanics), heat transfer and mass transfer. The treatment of the three areas of transport phenomena is done sequentially. The subjects of momentum, heat, and mass transfer are introduced, in that order, and appropriate analysis tools are developed.· Conservation Of Mass: Control-Volume Approach· Newton's Second Law Of Motion: Control-Volume Approach· Conservation Of Energy: Control-Volume Approach· Shear Stress In Laminar Flow· Analysis Of A Differential Fluid Element In Laminar Flow· Differential Equations Of Fluid Flow· Inviscid Fluid Flow· Dimensional Analysis· Viscous Flow· The Effect Of Turbulence On Momentum Transfer· Flow In Closed Conduits· Fundamentals Of Heat Transfer· Differential Equations Of Heat Transfer· Steady-State Conduction· Unsteady-State Conduction· Convective Heat Transfer· Convective Heat-Transfer Correlations· Boiling And Condensation· Heat-Transfer Equipment· Radiation Heat Transfer· Fundamentals Of Mass Transfer· Differential Equations Of Mass Transfer· Steady-State Molecular Diffusion· Unsteady-State Molecular Diffusion· Convective Mass Transfer· Convective Mass Transfer Between Phases· Convective Mass-Transfer Correlations · Mass-Transfer Equipment

This textbook offers an introduction to multiple, interdependent transport phenomena as they occur in various fields of physics and technology like transport of momentum, heat, and matter. These phenomena are found in a number of combined processes in the fields of chemical, food, biomedical, and environmental sciences. The book puts a special emphasis on numerical modeling of both purely diffusive mechanisms and macroscopic transport such as fluid dynamics, heat and mass convection. To favor the applicability of the various concepts, they are presented with a simplicity of exposure, and synthesis has been preferred with respect to completeness. The book includes more than 130 graphs and figures, to facilitate the understanding of the various topics. It also presents many modeling examples throughout the text, to control that the learned material is properly understood. There are some typos in the text.
