Excerpt from Modern Times and the Living Past To present the history of the world in a single volume and to make the story at the same time attractive and useful to young readers is a most difficult task. Only the general sweep of the great current of events can be followed; only the salient features that contributed most to the development of the nations can be included. The two questions that must constantly be in the mind of the writer are, first, what to choose for the text, and second, how to present it. As to the first, he must be able to appraise historic values; he must present that which will lead the reader to visual ize the past so as best to grasp the problems that contributed most to the social, moral, economic, and political development of the peoples whom he is studying. Thus by acquiring a correct knowledge of his historical inheritance, the reader will understand and appreciate the principles on which are based the ideals and institutions of the civilization of the present. As to the second, the method of presenting history, especially for young readers, these facts must be borne in mind: The great majority of high-school pupils will never become specialists in history. Intensive scientific study from the sources is therefore out of place in the secondary schools, except for an occasional diversion. It is recommended that classes be led to dip now and then into the source fountains; but if confined to this form of study, pupils will leave school with no knowledge of the great march of human events, and with little or no interest to continue the study in the future. Moreover, they will miss the culture and the intense interest that pertains to the great human story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Living Past: A Sketch in Western Progress Public interest in history is clearly on the increase. There is, however, one obstacle to its effective study which is growing likewise, and has in recent years become serious and even threatening. Not only is mankind, by thought and action, constantly accumulating the material for fresh history, but our knowledge of the past is, by the exploration of the world, by the discovery of fresh documents, above all by the widening of our notion of history itself, becoming immeasurably fuller and more complex. The growing interest seems to run some risk of being smothered by the abundance of its food. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction In the spring of 1946, Evelyn Sert stands on the deck of a ship bound for Palestine. For the twenty-year-old from London, it is a time of adventure and change when all things seem possible. Swept up in the spirited, chaotic churning of her new, strange country, she joins a kibbutz, then moves on to the teeming metropolis of Tel Aviv, to find her own home and a group of friends as eccentric and disparate as the city itself. She falls in love with a man who is not what he seems when she becomes an unwitting spy for a nation fighting to be born. When I Lived in Modern Times is "an unsentimental coming-of-age story of both a country and a young immigrant . . . that provides an unforgettable glimpse of a time and place rarely observed" (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Excerpt from Reflections on Ancient and Modern History But it may Very reafonably be doubted whe' ther the Hiflories of ancient Times are To con ducive to thefe Purpofes, as we are generally apt to think. It is certain, the firft Ages of the World, though they may fupply matter of Wonder and Curiofity, can never be fit Patterns for our Imitation. The Plainnefs and Simplicity of the early Inhabitants of the Earth, their wandering and laborious Life, their Ignorance of Ambition, and Contempt of Luxury andn Riches, can find no Place among the falfe 'im provements of later Times.
