Excerpt from Modern Bible Study and the Christian Life The fear is very general among a large body of Chris tians that the critical study of the Bible must draw attention away from the work of the Spirit as the great Enlightener and thus is sure to be destructive of the spiritual life. I once shared in this fear. But a fuller acquaintance with the character and work of the leading critical scholars has convinced me that the legitimate and logical result of the new Bible study is the exaltation of the Hob! Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Life IT is the purpose of this book to suggest a type of Bible study fitted to the needs of modern times. Bible study to many people is a dreary business. It seems far away from the com mon vital interests of humanity. Those who have made any thoroughgoing study of the Bible, however, know that it takes hold upon the realities, the common tasks, and the deep human loyalties in which men and women live and move and have their being. Should not, therefore, the Christian Scrip tures, both through courses of study and methods of organization, be treated natu rally, scholarly, sensibly, practically, and always in relation to real life and conduct? Modern scholarship is ministering greatly to the study of the Scriptures; it is helping to make the Bible real, not by making it less divine, but more human, more intelligent, preface more capable of sustaining faith In the liv ing God. Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. What Does God Think about Technology? From smartphones to self-driving cars to space travel, new technologies can inspire us. But the breakneck pace of change can also frighten us. So how do Christians walk by faith through the innovations of Silicon Valley? And how does God relate to our most powerful innovators? To build a biblical theology of technology, journalist and tech optimist Tony Reinke examines nine key texts from Scripture to show how the world's discoveries are divinely orchestrated. Ultimately, what we believe about God determines how we respond to human invention. With the help of several theologians and inventors throughout history, Reinke dispels twelve common myths in the church and offers fourteen ethical convictions to help Christians live by faith in the age of big tech. Excerpt from The Triumph of Life: A Biblical Study of God's Way With Our Race Modern writers, either those Whom I oppose or those With Whom I agree. This has been for the sake of brevity, and not from any affectation of independence. Indeed perhaps it is best in these days of many books to lay no claim to originality beyond the order of one's thoughts. My Scripture citations are generally from the Revised Version. Excerpt from The Christian Idea in the Modern World A large number of people, both young and old, brought up under the influence of historic Christianity, have begun seriously to question whether the Christian Idea is fitted to the actual conditions of our modern world. The distance seems to widen between the idealism of far-away Galilee and the battle-ground of life today. The Christian Idea seems to many people to be true neither to the facts of human nature nor to the facts of human life. The contrast is sharpened by those who insist that Jesus' teaching of love outlaws the use of force, inculcates literal non-resistance, and insists on peace at any cost. To vindicate the reasonableness and practicability of the Christian Idea, to show that it is the only one which does justice to all the elements of human nature, and is the only one which can be trusted to deal adequately with the prob lems of our modern world, is the purpose of these chapters. The material in this book was used originally in sermons and addresses by the author. It has been entirely revised for the present publication.
