Sibyl Robinson hears the evening news that Quebec's Lagado government has called a referendum it hopes will separate the French province from Canada. Upset by the announcement the unilingual anglophone leaves her flat on Cumae street and walks her dog Trio through Montreal's Little Burgundy district down to the Lachine Canal. On the way home she discovers the slain body a black youth in a school yard near her flat. Packets of cocaine are found in the boy's pockets and police assume the killing to be drug related. Sibyl's concern over the murder of 'one of her people' leads her to a friend of the slain youth and the two set out to find the killer. Their unusual investigation leads to officer Jean-Luc Turcotte as the culprit. He has been stealing confiscated cocaine from a police lock-up and soliciting black neighborhood youths to deliver the drugs to his selected customers. Detective lieutenant Marc Kelly is assigned to the case and Jean-Luc is eventually charged with the youth's murder. Sibyl who becomes a chief witness for the defense breaks with her son Mark when he decides to defend the white officer. A rather bizarre trial ensues and Jean-Luc is acquitted.

South Asia has 14 per cent of the world's refugee population and is the principal source and host of refugees. The causes behind the displacement -- political instability, armed conflict, lack of resources and so on in South Asia and its immediate neighbourhood have not declined but, in fact, have been increasing; and the security threats posed by the refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) is set to increase, given the lack of resources and poor governance prevalent in the region. Yet, none of the countries in South Asia have signed any major convention or treaty at the international level in regard to refugees; nor have they any national legislation or regional framework to deal with these issues. A comprehensive study focusing on the various dimensions of displacement in South Asia including refugees, migrants, stateless persons and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) was felt imperative by the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies. Acknowledging non-traditional sources of insecurity as being the cornerstone of human insecurity, the IPCS had commenced to focus on a range of non-military threats to security including Drug Trafficking, Terrorism, Refugees, Organised Crime, Governance and Environmental Issues. The current volume with specific focus on migration and displacement is a small step in that direction. Published in association with Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, grade: 1,0, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Angewandte Mathematik III), language: English, abstract: Segmentation is used to locate boundaries of an object in a given image. Finding those boundaries is important e.g. for visualizing three dimensional objects and measuring their surface or volume. Ideally, the boundaries coincide with the edges seen in the image. However, due to noise, partly missing information or in case of subjective contours the edges can be irregular and discontinuous. The human brain is able to perform visual completion that is to say it can in many cases complete those interrupted boundaries by filling in the missing gaps. Simple segmentation methods fail to do so, whereas the subjective surface method succeeds by sharpening the surface around the edges and connecting segmented boundaries across the gaps. Michael Fried is using finite elements with the subjective surface method resulting in an algorithm that detects interrupted boundaries as well as subjective contours in 2D. As an extension of Michael Fried's work, the algorithm presented in this thesis is able to complete missing boundary segments in 3D, smooth out the contours and perform modal completion.

The collation of large electronic databases of scienti?c and commercial infor- tion has led to a dramatic growth of interest in methods for discovering struc- res in such databases. These methods often go under the general name of data mining. One important subdiscipline within data mining is concerned with the identi?cation and detection of anomalous, interesting, unusual, or valuable - cords or groups of records, which we call patterns. Familiar examples are the detection of fraud in credit-card transactions, of particular coincident purchases in supermarket transactions, of important nucleotide sequences in gene sequence analysis, and of characteristic traces in EEG records. Tools for the detection of such patterns have been developed within the data mining community, but also within other research communities, typically without an awareness that the - sic problem was common to many disciplines. This is not unreasonable: each of these disciplines has a large literature of its own, and a literature which is growing rapidly. Keeping up with any one of these is di?cult enough, let alone keeping up with others as well, which may in any case be couched in an - familiar technical language. But, of course, this means that opportunities are being lost, discoveries relating to the common problem made in one area are not transferred to the other area, and breakthroughs and problem solutions are being rediscovered, or not discovered for a long time, meaning that e?ort is being wasted and opportunities may be lost.

Originally published in 1951 and co-written by screenwriter Lowell S. Hawley, this is the autobiography of American psychiatrist, Dr. James T. Fisher. It is the story of Dr. Fisher’s life and of his experiences, and seeks to portray his philosophy. “I am, I believe, one of the few laymen who has ever sat quietly taking notes and asking questions, while the psychiatrist lay on the couch giving voice to his thoughts at random.”—Lowell S. Hawley (Foreword) “As readable as a primer and as interesting as a Kinsey Report.”—Memphis Commercial Appeal “This warmly human and humorous autobiography offers an easy, delightful and intelligent introduction to psychiatry, from the practicing psychiatrist’s point of view...a most engrossing book.”—Cincinnati Times “It is unlikely that laymen could find anywhere else such lively and enlightening explanations of schizophrenia, manic-depression, paranoia, the significant of Freud, the technique of analysis, the uses of hypnotism and the meaning of dreams....And all these matters are expounded with colloquial informality, with salty humor and with interest and highly condensed case histories.”—Orville Prescott, New York Times
